I'm not saying he is Russell Westbrook, but Sexton has that kind of athletic rawness to him (minus the court vision and fearlessness) coming into the league. I believe Westbrook was also 19 when he started.

Rus was pretty awful his first few years in the league, and he at least had the benefit of playing with KD in his rookie year which helped his advanced stats. Sexton has literally nothing to play with this year, and his advanced stats definitely reflect that.

Yeah, he has a lot of development to do, but I'm not ready to write him off.

I probably overvalue the 8th pick, but I figure when you draft that high, you ought to be getting a perennial starter at least. I can only hope that's what Sexton turns into eventually. Right now, he's got perennial 7th man written all over him. Hope I'll be wrong.

He is just bad.

If he improves in the next season and beyond, then great. That would be a testimonal for his work ethic and maturation. But he is a very bad player right now on both ends. He is the PG and he should control the game. His IQ and feel leave a lot to be desired. You can't run an offense like that.

My other issue is that he is a 1 positional offensive and defensive player. Unlike SGA who can play 1-3. That means that it also limits our ability to draft BPA in future drafts if the player is a PG.
Which is why I don't think you should draft smaller guards with high picks unless it's obvious they will be excellent players (Paul, Curry, Lillard)

SGA, or either of the Bridges.

SGA was my guy. I wanted to trade down with the Clippers and select SGA and Huerter.I loved both of them.

Regardless, it's too early to draw conclusions. While Sexton wasn't my guy, I'm not writing him off.

Funny thing is, Sexton's free throw and 3-point percentages are actually fantastic for a player his age. He'd probably be among the rookie efficiency leaders (albeit on much lower volume) if he was on one of those teams that simply tells players not to shoot midrange jumpers.

This is why i am not worried about the advanced stats saying he is the worst player in the world. Fox had similar attempts last year. I do not think his shot profile continues this way, and I don't think he is going to be bad shooting the 3.

He needs a summer of strength conditioning and he will be able to handle the 3 a lot better.

Also a proper coaching staff should help him alot. We know Drew talks to him in game but nothing from press conferences, news articles, etc suggest that Drew is extremely active in helping Sexton develop. From what I can tell is Sexton's dad is his shooting coach and Delly has taken the role of helping him develop.

Delly does film sessions with him. At least with Kyrie we knew Byron was really working with him. It just doesn't seem like that kind of relationship with Drew and Sexton.

The other guys who seem to work with Kyrie for years was Phil Handy. He ruin his chances of sticking around by ruining Hood last season. Handy might have been better than anyone currently on this staff for Sexton if he was able to stay around. Longo seems like the guy working with Sexton in pregame warm ups.

Dan Gilbert doesn't mess around when it comes to avoiding guys who openly state they don't want to be drafted by Cleveland. He was my 2nd choice behind Mikal Bridges but it is what it is at this point.

Re-working the shot of a guy who was shooting 38.9% (37.3% for his career at that point) from three on 6.7 attempts that season was shambolic. I never thought he helped improve the games of any of our players. Sure he worked with Kyrie but that dude was already top 3 most skilled in the league from the start.

Handy deserved to get fired for sure. I was just putting out there that his experience with Kyrie might have translated to helping Sexton more than anyone currently on the staff. If the coaching staff's best option is to have Longo work with Sexton that says alot and not in a good way.

I personally had all 3 of them rated ahead of Sexton on draft night. However, actually imagine them playing on this current cavs team. They would all be experiencing similar struggles to Sexton and there would be a bunch of very similar complaints.

Disagree about SGA. He can run a team and would have helped our guys.

Working in a pristine, highly-functional offense, SGA is averaging a modest 2.9 assists and 1.8 turnovers per game...what would those numbers look like if he was on the Cavs? Would they realistically be much better than Sexton's 3.4 assists and 2.8 turnovers per game?

I don't think he would hurt the offense like Sexton has, at the very least because he wouldn't chuck up half as many bad shots. But i don't think he's good enough yet to help a team like the Cavs either.

You forget that he shares the floor with ton of other playmakers. He is being relegated to spot up the majority of the time. He has shown enough to me to know that he is a good decision maker and a pretty good passer overall, not just in PnR situations. He is very heady and can get to the lane pretty easily and his recognition as far as when to pass is excellent. Zizic would have benefitted a ton playing with him as he would feed him the ball on the roll.

His USG% is 17.9 and Sexton's is 25.4. SGA doesn't have the keys yet, while Sexton does.
