Either that or will take a longer term offer from the Cavs that provides some security. Another injury on the QO season and his contract hopes go way down. I could see the two parties agreeing to a three year deal - maybe 3/50 or something like that.
As a cavs fan I'd be really happy if he signed that contract but I don't see Sexton agreeing to such a discounted contract.
I expect him to bet on himself and come out with a vengeance to show other teams he's completely healthy and deserves
at least a 20 million a year contract.

You can also take a salary back in trade at that price. Has to be final year, but there might be some teams over the tax that would like the savings. Someone like Ben McLemore with the Blazers would fit into the exception and can be traded on Dec 14. That would shave $1.7M off the Blazers. They are not deep into the tax so it wouldn't be a huge savings, but would save them around $4M or so total at least. McLemore isn't being played a lot, so I could see a situation like this being where they could use the disabled player exception.
I'd almost take the chance on someone like Justin James from the Charge before McLemore tbh. McLemore has proven over the last decade to be terrible. At least James did score 31 points in a game for the Kings last season.

There is no team in this league that's gonna pay Sexton to be a Top 3 offensive option next summer. This was the case before his injury and it's even more the case now. This is a naturally ball-dominant, midget sized SG whose game is 90% based on speed and burst. There's no telling what the meniscus injury will do to him. The track record for repair surgeries is pretty good, but... it's still knee surgery.

The combination of Sexton's game and physical traits is such that he really can't afford to lose any explosiveness.

IMO this just cements his future status in the league - microwave scorer off the bench. That's how the Cavs should use him as well if we decide to retain him.

He was worth 4/80 on the open market this year. Not an overpay
We have no idea what he would have been worth on the open market.

We know he was gunning for $25M/year from us and didn’t get it.

Sounded like Cavs were closer to that $20M number, but after this season, I have to imagine that number (and the years attached to it) is going to drop significantly.

That’s why you take the contract. You never know and now he is out for the season and might have to play of the QO or sign a lesser deal
Or you are Dennis Schroeder, turn down 4/90 and are on the MLE after flopping hard for one year

Or a Nerlen Noel I’m telling you sometime greediness bites you in the ass. If the contract is more than fair taking it is the safest option. Injuries or a terrible year can fuck up the negotiations

In this case, I blame Rich Paul being a bad agent and not Nerlens but I agree

Or,the coach of this team should have sat Collin when he was obviously hurting from the Laker game.

Bad break for the kid and the team.

I don’t usually like to talk about $ when dealing with injuries, but this kid is going to be fantastically wealthy and make well over $100 million during the course of his career, probably closer or exceeding $200 million given he’s 22.

I’m just truly curious what you think some team might offer that we will have to make a decision on? I generally have no idea for him.

I thought Jarrett Allen might come in somewhere between $16-$20 million per. I thought we might have paid a slight premium, and a month later I felt we got a really good deal. It was easy to ballpark his value.

With Sexton I truthfully have no idea. I know what his ambitions were, and clearly this is a bad break for what he was looking for.

Four or five years and _ million?

Fill in the blank where you think it’s a no brainer to match and where you think it’s too much.
I'd offer 5 years, $70 million. I think that's a fair contract for both sides.

There is absolutely no way of knowing a fair amount when someone is recovering from surgery and missing an entire season. I think he may or may not chose to give the Cavs the attention they want from him going forward as it may be his camp was already looking for an exit strategy.
Unless Altman offers the same thing he offered before the injury which at this point would be a site unseen trust offer not knowing his health long term, he will most likely play on the QO or slim chance still somebody will offer a short term prove it contract for a small enough amount the Cavs should match but won't because he tells them not too aka you fucked me taking me out of my game this season and I have no interest in being some 3rd fiddle goodbye

A lot will depend on how the Cavs do without him. Since Sexton went down they have not had a 100-point game. Of course, Mobley and Allen and Mark have also been out, too, so we don't know anything yet. But if the Cavs continue to have problems scoring they may feel they need to sign Collin.

OTOH, if they do just as well without him (less offense but better defense) they may just let him walk rather than give him $20 million per year or whatever.

Fedor reported that the Cavs "challenged" him before the season to demonstrate that what he does contributes to winning. Now he won't get that chance.

They will probably take the first half of next season to evaluate if the knee injury had cost him any burst (can he still dunk left-handed on 6'8" guys?) and if what he does contributes to winning. If the answers are both positive they may try to extend him in the middle of the season but why would he do that just a few months away from UFA?

The other alternative is for the Cavs to try and evaluate him physically next summer and offer him a team friendly deal in hopes he'll take it rather than risk another injury. As a little guy who attacks the rim a lot I'm surprised he made it this far without getting hurt.
