I'd offer 5 years, $70 million. I think that's a fair contract for both sides.
Since he's likely not getting an expensive and long contract after this injury, I wonder if Sexton will want to sign for a shorter period of time and bet he can play well enough in 3 years to earn a bigger contract at that time. He'd only be 26 at the end of a three year deal.

Doubtful Sexton ever plays another dribble for the Cavs. His knee injury was worse than expected and him losing his speed is very likely. My guess they look to replace him this summer with another scorer.

That’s pretty doom & gloom. I don’t know why that all would happen?

Also Sexton's gf will break up with him, his dog will die and his house will get flooded.

I mean if you are going to predict bad things for Sexton with zero proof, no reason not to go big.

Its a bad injury. Degenerative.

Actually allot more success with miniscus tears after sugury than just letting them heal. Sexton picked the right decision for him, he has a great work ethic and he is young, he should heal just fine,

Most likely Sexton plays on the QO offer or 3 year contract with a player option for less than he was going to get, but the assumption is crazy.

Why? Most NBA players that have had this injury have fully recovered. Jimmy Butler is still doing quite well after suffering one a few years ago.

It seems like from the timeline that was given that Sexton has a meniscus repair vs a meniscectomy. A meniscus repair sews back together the torn meniscus but his rehab will take 3-6 months. A meniscectomy is where they cut out the torn parts which has a rehab of 3-6 weeks.

It seems backwards that the worse outcome takes a shorter time to rehab but for Sexton being out the rest of the season is probably better for him long term.

He was worth 4/80 on the open market this year. Not an overpay

A) I don’t think he was worth that on the open market, if he was then it would have been easy to trade him, B) he just tore his meniscus which changes his value until we know how well he recovers

I think this is likely. He could play under the QO but then would have no guaranteed money beyond next season. He could bet on himself, but what if another injury occurs? A three year deal gives him a path to a bigger deal down the line while also providing guaranteed money if things go sideways. 3/50 seems like a fair risk on both sides and an extension could be worked out before year 3.

Yep There is little probably about it imo. It is proven the route he took has much much better return to full strength outcomes than had he rushed back getting it removed which tbh I expected for sure he would do given his relentlessness and also in a contract season.
I think it is interesting though how despite not signing with the offer the Cavs showed his agent he may have in fact been putting too much trust in his agent to get the deal done without his input. I mean when asked about his contract in the past his response was almost always I just play basketball. Makes me question how much he really even cares about 20 vs 25 or 4 vs 5 etc

If he was coming off a year like last year and healthy, betting on yourself would make sense. Coming off a meniscus tear and with his style of play, I’d be looking for something in the middle where I lock down another $50 million and still hit free agency at 26 or 27.

It kind of reminds me of the Steph timing if anything. He was on the crazy cheap deal for a few years, but the kid was still extraordinarily wealthy even if things had went south. He had made $60 million or whatever even if he was underpaid vastly for a few years at the end

Then he signed the freak deal after emerging and staying healthy and becoming a superstar.

Not that I expect Colin to be Steph, but you don’t need to be Steph to make Steph-like money. He’s way underpaid like all the top 5 guys.

Trying to prove yourself and prove them wrong on a QO would be a frightening proposition. Another injury and you may never see that huge money. Taking something in the middle on a little shorter deal is betting on yourself and securing your future all at once.

Not that I know the Cavs will offer it, and I don’t know what someone else offers, but if I don’t love the offers, I’m looking for something in the middle rather than just a one year QO.

I heard rumors of offers last year. Obviously if the $80- $100 million was on the table and it was a matter of 4 or 5 years, it ended up probably being a bad bet. I guess we will see what is out there at the end of the year.
