From a column by Kelsey Russo on Garland in The Athletic:

Garland’s sophomore season started on a high note. He was averaging 17.2 points and 6.3 assists per game through the first six games before his shoulder injury....

With him on the court in 286 minutes this season, the Cavs have an offensive rating of 110.5. With him off the court, their offensive rating is 102.2. They are 8.3 points per 100 possessions better when Garland is on the court than when he isn’t.

Garland worked out with his brother and his dad, Winston, during the extended offseason, finding his way to a gym. He tried all kinds of workouts to stay in shape: running, pool workouts, boxing and biking. He lifted weights to build strength and fill out his body. He changed his diet, cutting out fast food and sweets, eating more protein and vegetables.

When the Cavs held a minicamp in September, Bickerstaff noticed an air of confidence in Garland. He saw an added strength. He noticed an ability to finish through contact, make shots at all levels and create shots for himself and others. There was a willingness to compete on both ends of the floor...

He floored teammates during the early games of the season with his drastic improvements.

“I don’t think there was anyone that could have foreseen this,” Larry Nance Jr. said in December. “I mean, he’s been, defensively, has been improved. He’s talking, he’s calling plays, he’s relaying the plays that J.B. calls, you know, tells him, and he’s relaying the team being loud, taking the lead, and that standpoint. So I can’t say enough positive about Darius Garland.”

Throughout the first stretch of his second year, Garland said he’s noticed how the game is slowing down for him. He sees different reads, picking out various places where his teammates get their best shots and when they get to those spots. He knows players’ tendencies around the league, their strengths and weaknesses and their spots on the floor from watching film.....

“He’s a unifier,” Bickerstaff said. “What he does on the offensive end of the floor is, he involves everybody. He makes everybody feel like they’re part of it. So having him on the floor accelerates that stuff. He makes his teammates better. He can obviously score the ball. But he’s a guy who, through his spirit and his game, brings people together.”

Last night he kicked in 24 points against the Knicks on 9-for-17. It looks like he's fully recovered from the shoulder injury and back in sync. I'm looking forward to seeing him continue to grow over the next 50+ games. He just turned 21 last week.

I'm actually more concerned about Garland's head than I am his physical ability.

I think the talent is there but one thing goes wrong and he pouts and sulks. He loses focus and has terrible body language.

He's constantly going over to the sideline shaking his head.

NBA basketball is hard. You have to work. You have to want it. You have to man up. You can't dwell on mistakes and imperfections. You eat it and get better.

If he doesn't get his head game right... he's not going to reach whatever potential he has.

Are you keeping him out trade discussions, yes or no?

Hell no.

It's difficult though. If we can still sell high on his potential and we think he won't make drastic strides...go for it.

In the discussions, but I can't imagine he has much value at this point.
I've always had reservations about the Sexland pairing and felt that if the Cavs are gonna be competitive they'll need to choose one... If they are planning to have a gritty team then Sexton fits the mode more... But the thing is Garland's value is low also, he hasn't shown any explosive games (career high is 24 pts if am not mistaken) and no consistency also... Cavs might be lucky to get a Lonzo Ball for him (he's not very good also but I think he'll fit Sexton better)...

The type of player Garland is right now will never contribute to winning, he needs to make changes to his offensive game or become much more efficient.

I think there was either a misevaluation of his jumper, or he hasn't made the improvements that they expected.

It's not that he's a bad shooter, he's just not a functional one. He is only comfortable when set with staggered feet. He can't shoot off the dribble unless it's a step back or step back & left. He makes very few jumpers going right. He even passes up forward moving shots in P&R when defenses go under.

Only 33% of his total shots are from 3PT this year, which is even less than his rookie year. They love to compare the backcourt to POR potentially, but both of their guards have taken > 50% of their shots from 3PT this year.

This is a compounding issue when you're 6'1" and < 200 lbs (and also don't have the forward momentum mid range pull up). It's one thing to not comfortably get off 3PT shots regularly, but he also has his work cut out for him scoring in the paint at his size. I think he's improved on the interior, but that's not saying much. He rarely draws fouls, and the below average efficiency there leads to 5 on 4 breaks the other way regularly.

To me it all comes back to his inability to hit threes off momentum, especially when moving forwards. That's a vital shot right now with all of the drop coverage being played, and it's one of the most difficult skills to develop. This was an issue he had as a rookie, and I think he's gotten worse in that area, not better.

if the sixers want love + garland for ben simmons, i'll pull the trigger

His dribbling is not functional also... It does look fancy and smooth, but doesn't always translate to good plays and too much sauce for my taste, there are no style points in the nba...

Wasn't Garland the *only* player to have a good game just 2 games ago? Yall are so schizophrenic and dire. The kid played 3 games in college, half a season his rookie year and an abridged/nontraditional offseason. He was having a fantastic start til he injured his shooting shoulder. He's been decent since. If yall wanna jump off the ledge on him, please do. But these constant hyperbolic reactions after every game of a 72 game season are exhausting.
