Isnt his max like 250M? He’s not turning that down

the way you wrote that it kinda sounds like youre paying too much....giving someone an offer that they cant refuse

two 6 fut 2 guards at max contracts? doesnt that in and of itself seem kind of odd?

its not too late....the cavs might be able to get four firsts for mitchell now and gilbert and the cavs new gm will be all smiles should donovan jack off next years playoffs with another 30 from three....three years in a row with that shit?

what kind of trade value will he have then?

he wont be ben simmons.....but he 100 percent will no longer be donovan mitchell...at least the one that i thought they traded for

Look dude, youre not wrong. But the NBA is a league of stars and we are a small market. We simply had to pull the trigger on getting a top 10-15 player. You dont win shit without this. You dont necessarily win it all with it either. But imagine if we (most likely) lost in the 1st round this year and we look back and realize we dropped the ball on attaining a superstar. This team isnt shit without Mitchell. A team led by Garland, Lauri, and a developing Mobley isnt winning shit. Furthermore, trying to rely on this
core group to even remain loyal to staying
here is a joke. We had to do it.

A team led by Garland, Lauri, and Mobley could absolutely have made the playoffs and gotten thrashed by the Knicks in the first round this year. So the “not winning shit” argument is odd. I see no reason to believe that Lauri/Garland/Mobley/Agbaji etc. would have been less loyal to Cleveland than Mitchell and many reasons to believe they would have been more so.

And stars get traded in the NBA fairly regularly, this wouldn’t have been our last shot.

Yes we eventually would have had to go for a star addition to truly contend. But we would have known what we had with Mobley and Markkanen when we did it. Even with Garland and Allen.

We put ourselves on the contention clock, greatly reduced flexibility, and radically increased expectations with the Mitchell trade. In at least the short run we’re somewhat better but in general those factors make it less fun for me.

Mitchell can get the 30% max from us or another team. I'm not sure what the exact difference would be but it's not going to be a supermax vs regular max contract that other players have to decide against. Even though Mitchell got All-NBA, he would have to get it while with the Jazz to be eligible for the supermax.

I think the roster was pretty good before the Mitchell acquisition. However, when the trade was made- Lauri wasnt even close to the player he is now. I also never considered Allen a star. I consider Garland a fringe star- aka a dude who will make a few all star games. I think Garland is a 3rd option on a championship team. Hes the 2nd option on a perrennial playoff team. We are still in the dark in the evolution of Mobley. Mitchell was a proven superstar at the time of the trade- a bonafied top 10-15 player. I agree that the trade was a little lopsided in retrospect, but only because I now know Lauri is a star. 90% of this sub, myself included, was thrilled when the trade went down. Now, after being sodomized by the Knicks, we have buyers remorse. Honestly, if Garland improves, Spida performs, and Mobley evolves- then we have a wildly talented core. We need to keep this core as Mobley & Garland improve and hopefully find a way to add a couple wing players. But most importantly, our core has to perform in the playoffs.

Really don't see Mitchell sticking around unless we look like a bona-fide contender

I think so too. Mitchell will be 27 next season, that is the start of his prime. The decline starts at 30. He should know that and also realize if he is going to be the #1 option on a contender that it will be in that window. I'm not sure he will want to wait around for Mobley and other younger guys on a roster to develop to be a contender if he has as good or better options somewhere else.

He seems like a guy who would prefer a big market too so we'd need to be a clear championship contender for him to extend.

I also think star players want to play with their friends which is why I would worry about him showing up at other NBA playoff games to watch it. Like if he is willing to go out of his way to go watch another teams game in person, there has to be at least one person that he is close enough with to warrant it.

WTF. When the trade was made Lauri was exactly the player he is for the Jazz! He was the SAME PERSON! This is a fact! Are you suggesting that Lauri was mysteriously transubstantiated into a different person on his flight from Cleveland to Salt Lake?

No. Myself nor management envisioned him becoming a top 25 player. I think his nomination of 6th player of the year award ( did he win? not sure) reflects that sentiment.

Take of the Decade!

People here don't want to admit it, but it's blindingly obvious where all this is headed...a year from now, after another dismal playoff exit, one of the premier discussions will be WHO we trade Mitchell to...not if.

I said it the moment we stupidly and impulsively blew our load on this non-gamechanger. The Cavs went from being exalted around the league for the direction of their rebuild to an utter gag reel in one offseason. Bravo Koby, you dickless wonder. I hope that LeBron-less playoff cameo was worth it!

Get a fucking grip, guys.

We'll run it back or flip Mitchell for a bunch of assets. Either way, it was worth the "shot" the Cavs took. You can't condemn the team without a real bench or SF rotation for this year. I think hindsight bias is telling you all that things are worse than they really are.

Deep breaths, my friends.

I’m still not convinced he is top 25.
