At first glance, this is a solid deal for everybody...but only if you dont consider the roster implications.
First, lets erase the non factors....Johnson and Aurbach. Neither move the needle for anybody.
Pittsburgh is facing the same 40 man crunch that we are. This trade would make it worse. They would drop one, but add three that have to be added. So from the Pirates view, they would have to add in the cost of prospects that could be lost in R5, plus the cost of younger players that would have to be DFAd.
From SFs side, its a solid trade...a young, established SP with some upside and a decent MIF prospect for an excess catching prospect and a decent SP prospect. Of course, it depends upon how SF rates Plesac and Hjelles.
From our point of view, we get our targeted need in spades. The cost is a quality, cheap SP, a top five prospect who we don't need, and an excess decent MIF prospect. It also really helps our roster crunch...gaining one, but losing three. IF the FO truly thinks that it has a young SP that can seamlessly move to the rotation, without negatively effecting depth, this is a winning trade.
Wed be looking at Allen, Morgan, or Morris to replace Plesac. It appears as a gamble with decent odds.
If Plesac can be replaced immediately, this trade would make the Guardians the division fav, as things stand right now.
In the end, I don't think that package would pry Reynolds away.
