In 73 years worth of NBA Rookie(s) of the Year (68 after 1953, where official records were kept), I see at least 35 actual Hall-of-Fame level players. I think the award CAN be a good measure of certain talent, but not every year, especially when certain guys are late bloomers.

In Mobley's case, he was deserving of the award, but the level of talent was too close to actually shift the position IMO. But have no fear! Because I can easily make a comparison for Mobley's rookie year VS another all-Cav great:

AgeGamesMinutesPointsReboundsAssists
Player A218033.715.78.13.8
Player B206933.815.08.32.5

Player A happened to also lose out on Rookie of the Year to a 6'8 wing, who also seemed deserving by averaging 18 points and 8 rebounds. Player A, named Brad Daugherty, lost to Chuck Person. Player B is Mobley. Their averages go beyond these basic numbers, almost uncanny. Their minute-by-minute averages are neck and neck. But Daugherty had more assists while Mobley had better steals (+0.2) and blocks (+1.1). Those averages also reflects this in Basketball-Reference's Box-Plus-Minus numbers (or BPM, for short). Brad's Offensive Numbers were slightly better, but Mobley's Defensive Numbers were also better.

This is the link (click me).

I'm liking Mobley's prospects even more now, since he's a full year younger than Brad in his rookie season. He could be a prime Daugherty with Garnett defense and Duncan headiness. Now if he can just stay healthy (knock on wood)...

While,I think Mobley should have won "Riokie of the Year". I have no problem with Barnes winning it. It was basically a two player race between Barnes and Mobley. Now,if Cade would have won it,I would have an issue with it. You can't give "Rookie of the Year" to a guy that played poorly the first 25-30 games of the season. At least,Barnes and Mobley played well since the beginning of the season.

It should have been Mobley,Barnes and nobody else on the ballot...imo

No knock on Barnes, he is great, and might end up being a superstar, though certainly biased to Mobley winning it (duh). However, I really do think it's unfortunate high level of skill on defense doesn't translate to stats. I'd say that, missing the playoffs, and the fact the Cavs have basically zero national coverage.... it was an uphill battle. Even, if Mobley was the clear winner, he probably would have really struggled to get it being in Cleveland. Regardless, Scottie certainly deserved it too. So...? Hopefully Mobley is more the type to take that as fuel to get better, and not the type that gets deflated.

You make it sound like Barnes doesn't play defense. While,Mobley is the better defender by a small margin; Barnes play good defense too. What separates Mobley and Barnes is that Barnes has a more polished offensive game than Mobley. Mobley and Barnes will probably be the best two players in their draft....imo

Mobley's defensive impact over Barnes is FAR..FAR beyond a "small margin".

Garland spoon fed Mobley a lot of baskets. He has a long way to go on offense. I argue with everyone about how much more polished barnes is right now.

Barnes got spoon fed a bunch by Siakim/Val Vleet.

Mobley is so much more polished than you give him credit for.
