I just realized that Evan has an awkward combination of body type, skills, and mindset. He is a tall, skinny dude who in theory should have developed a better offensive game especially shooting. If we dissect his forays to the basket he always wants to attack the rim for a dunk or a layup. Rarely do I see him finish with finesse (short hooks, floaters, etc) and if he tries it is usually a miss.

Defensively, he is good as a perimeter defender and blocking shots but he is also weak and soft in the interior. Bump him some and you could have an easy layup. He is also a weak “contested” rebounder. Thus, he cannot really be your anchor on the defensive end.

In essence, he is solely an inside player offensively while best as a perimeter defender. I have not seen anybody like that. LOL.
A true unicorn.

Mobley assesses himself after being drafted by the Cavs:

Evan Mobley

On what makes him different than other big men in the NBA

“My agility, length and defensive presence makes me different. I can guard almost every position and move my feet really well. On the offensive end, I can shoot the ball really well and run the floor.”

On who his game most resembles

“There’s a lot of players I’ve been told I resemble, but everyone’s game is different. Everyone has different tendencies. I wouldn’t say I have a perfect comparison to anyone. My game is my game.”

Dude, Evan Mobley is only 22 years old and has already played almost 200 NBA games. He'll get better.

He's averaging 16-10-3-2 last 10 games on a GOOD TEAM. It's not like hes putting up 23-10 on a BAD TEAM. (It's much harder to get stats on a good team/ as a part of a system).

he is also limited on the perimeter on defense. He's extremely good 1 v 1 - freakishly so for a nearly 7 footer. But if he's guarding a movement shooter, he is not as good. He gets hung up on screens, usually just going under, and is not the kind of guy to chase someone all over the court. He might do it for a possession or 2, but he's not doing it all night. He can't help himself but to gravitate to the lane and try to block shots from the weakside, which is a valuable skill, but the tradeoff is he often leaves his man unguarded for 3. I hate to sound all negative, but the truth is, he's not elevating the team like we hoped he would, as we had been led to believe he would. Last year, I think most of us thought that his progression might make Allen expendable. He is nowhere near that. Allen is the more valuable of our bigs right now and I don't think its close. And the gap between him and Wade at the 4 is not nearly as big as we would have hoped. Sure his stats are worlds better, but if I saw Evan was out and Wade was starting in his place, I wouldn't think our chances to win had gone down much, if any. He's still young and he's going to improve. But right now, he's just a guy.
On the offensive end, I can shoot the ball really well
Huh?

I know you think because you get "likes" from other Cavs fans that it validates your tough guy persona brudder. Dont tell me to GTFO out of anywhere...i bet you look like a little pale weasel standing next to me. Guarantee you only speak that way on the internet.

Anyway, I don't want to risk a ban...as I would lose a place to vent my Mobley concerns. I'll let you have this victory.

PS--I don't get satisfaction from Mobley/Cavs struggles. Those are YOUR words. It saddens me to see this kid fail assert himself. I will have a close eye on him during our 1st round...

Super Sillious.

Thank goodness he was not in there down the stretch…

They need to reign him back to about 25 minutes a night. He's in his 3rd year and still young. IT's not a death sentence to pull him back a bit.

Yes, he was instrumental in taking the Cavs from a terrible team to a 44 win team. Defensively he helped change the whole team.

But then they traded for Mitchell and what was possible changed and the way they need to play has changed.

And that way is faster and more spacing. And Allen has established himself as the premier big man on the team this season, so then he's the dude you try to find a fit next to.

And that's Dean Wade.

Mobley comes off the bench. He gets 24-26 minutes a night. ANd he doesn't close the game outside of weird situations.
