Ex Indians update

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Naquin struggled with high heat but he smashed the shit out of everything below the waist. Defensively, top three throwing arms in all of baseball and always in the top five in outfield assists when healthy.

Way better player than you make him out to be.
When healthy is the problem. He averaged 65 games a season with us.

Hindsight is always 20/20. Of course we all would like to have a guy in our outfield who’s hitting .260 with an .887 OPS and 8 homers with 24 RBI’s. But, 4 months ago, how many of us thought Tyler Naquin would be that guy? I’ve always liked Naquin, I would’ve loved to have him back on a minor league deal, but, as Bimbo has said, Tyler wasn’t interested. So we moved on. If he can stay healthy all year and keep this up, more power to him.

All this endless back and forth between CATS and JUP is tiring, I must say. Both bring a lot to this site, but too often it turns personal and very predictable.

No argument that his health was a real problem. But the way Cats put it , he was a lousy ball player which he wasn't. In 2019 he got absolutely screwed out of a gold glove. Had zero errors and at the time of injury (catch in Tampa} he was leading the American League in outfield assists. He made diving catches all over the place that year.

Outside of Michael Brantley, who had a higher career batting average as an outfielder during Tito's tenure? You probably won't find one.

Also. third in ROY voting counts as well.

to be sure, the naquin had no choice in the matter until the indians non-tendered him

FanGraphs has a column on whether Naquin is having a breakout season or not. Here's the conclusion...

Naquin’s breakout is a combination of some good fortune created by his home park and some weak opponents, but there are also some real changes in terms of his approach at the plate, as well as his approach to the swing itself that point to real improvement. It feels more than a bit aggressive to say he’ll finish the year as a top 10 offensive performer in the National League, but finishing the year as an above-average producer certainly feels well within the range of most likely possibilities.

The Great American Ballpark is statistically the best park in the league to hit in. And four of Naquin's eight homers were against the Pirates. But he's made some changes in his batting stance and his approach to hitting, specifically, swinging earlier in the count, that have helped him. And for some reason FanGraphs can't explain he's been seeing 70% fastballs. They seem to think that once pitchers stop throwing fastballs down the middle on the first pitch to Naylor his numbers will trend back to his career norms.

It he can stay healthy and stay in Cincinnati he might put up some decent production over the course of the season.

Jesus Aguilar still killing it with 20%ish of the season completed.

At this rate a lock for the All-Star game and legit MVP votes.

read that article earlier today - reasonably complimentary to naquin w/o going all in - injuries are always a threat and they do point out that he has a slugging % v pittsburgh of 1.314 - .446 v everyone else

I always liked Tyler most then most. Yes some of that is because of the conversation, but when he was healthy he performed. And i know the qualifier in there is huge, but it doesnt matter at this point, as good as he has looked we are not even 1/4th the way through the season, and health was always his issue.

And Edwin.. And Swisher..

He just didn't fit here and even Milwaukee cast him off after being an All-Star. He is on the wrong side of 30, but he is hitting like a quality DH right now, so who knows how much gas is really in the tank.

I have never said that Naquin was a lousy player....a lousy centerfielder, yes...but not a lousy player.

When healthy enough to play...which is maybe a third of the time...he has been a league average hitter, if used in a platoon.

Here are the OPS+ of the few decent outfielders we've had in the last fifteen years. (100 OPS+ is average)

Choo....122
Brantley....117
Luplow....106
Naquin...103
Chiz....102
Guyer...101

I found this interesting: Clint Frazier so far through 199 games has a grand total of 0.5 fWAR with the Yankees. While he is still young and probably has a future ahead of him, this is 1.0 less than what Zimmer has given the Indians so far (1.5 fWAR). I remember all the discussions about who we should have traded between the two and it looks pretty clearly like the answer was "both". Do I think Frazier's potential under control is worth much more than Zimmer's +1 WAR? Sure but there's a nonzero chance that he ends up being less valuable.

Also just shows how prospects are just that - prospects. Often not worth nearly as much as we might like to think... I know I've fallen into this trap of never wanting to trade prospects.

Usually, good prospects have more value in trade than in actual near future (6 years) production.
