Ex Indians update

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
If you haven't Played for the Guardians, you can't be an Ex-Guardian...

It's kind of like this: Bill Belichick isn't the former coach of the Ravens.

In fact, I'm not even going to count the Spring training roster. I'm talking about the first player who wears the G's uni on opening day and is subsequently dismissed to play in another organization. (optioned to Columbus doesn't count either.)

That's a fair ruling then...

Carlos Santana having a disappointing season for Royals, batting just .209 with 15 HRs and 65 RBIs. OBP is low too at .315. He does have more than 80 walks so his eye at the plate remains stellar. Not sure the Royals are getting their money’s worth.

Royals aren't looking to win exactly so it's not as big of deal..

Not sure the point of the signing. Clubhouse presence and mentor for the young guys?

They needed a veteran 1B and he was someone familiar to the organization and known as a good person and player... on paper it wasn't a bad move at all

Los had a "career" year in 2019.. his numbers surpassed anything he had ever posted.. His on & off field leadership was highly respected.. but.. waning quite a bit as the team was becoming Frankie's team.. The 2020 year made his career year vanish like fart in the wind.. It was the Covid year, but.. The CleFO decided that the option for the 21 season was NOT going to happen.. So both sides "moved on". John Sherman had become the owner of the Royals.. and knew the kind of leadership Los provided.. so, he landed there with a severe discount on his previous salary (half).. At half price.. the Covid year uncertainty.. and the dedication/outlook on "new everything".. the Royals took on the calculated risk. Los didn't disappoint in the leadership department.. or his on field defensive play at 1B.. his bat, however.. was Covid all over again or worse.. KC is on the hook for a significant increase in salary for Los in 2022.. a contract they'll regret, sadly.. It will probably be Los' last year in the big leagues as a player.. The young Royals are coming.. their pitching is slower than they'd like, but, their position players are spot on where they should be.. and could be.. It would not surprise anyone who has direct knowledge of Los' that he'd stay with the Royals in a player mentoring/development capacity..

That's the silver lining of why guys like Carlos Santana are coveted.. their knowledge and love of the game.. It will come down to Los' ability to convey his life's experience to the kids coming in the Royals system..

Thoughts?..

His career isn't going to be over that quickly and he started off fine but you have to factor in, he has played about more games than anyone over the last decade. Is he overpaid? Yeah he is, but thats kind of normal for a player of his caliber when he is close to the end of their careers. He will catch on with someone if the Royals decide to move him. Plus he is known for putting to much pressure on himself as well... He has always done that with a new club

i guess having merrifield and sperez arent enuf from the all important mentoring standpoint --- kc's goal was to be a .500 team this season - the santana signing was a mistake - and he gets 10.5 next season

The Royals march to the beat of a different drummer. Whether that changes under Sherman is yet to be known. They do two things that other small to mid market teams don't.

They refuse to rebuild and they hold onto to their own players. They seemingly always view their fortunes in an ultra positive way. They always seem to see themselves as just one bat or one pitcher away from contention...and they love their own players beyond what the rest of
baseball does.

So they sign Carlos and Minor for two years, trade a solid prospect in a package for two years of Benintendi, extend Hunter Dozier for four years, hang onto Soler and Duffy too long, even though to anybody watching from outside they had no chance to contend this year...so they end up not contending for the sixth straight year with one of the oldest teams in baseball.

Did anybody notice Eddie Rosario hit for the cycle the other day for the Braves.
What he did for us earlier this season still makes no sense to me. He had a much better track record.
Generally we (myself) were rather decent considering his performance, but if we are really being fair he could be considered the biggest disappointment of ours in 2021.

Eddie was starting to hit when the injury went down... when we felt we were out we needed to cut some money so we dealt him. I think he would have been kept if we weren't out of the race at the trade deadline...

ahh... disappointment...

There is no shortage of candidates..

This season started with the greatest of intentions.. the pitching staff was solidly ready to compete.. there were multiple choices for all but two spots in the field (catcher and 3B).. with the expectation that six spots would approach at least league average if a re-emergence of the pandemic didn't wipe out the season... Alas.. it wasn't a pandemic that reduced the Indians chances.. it was passivity.. Eddie Rosario.. couldn't hit.. wasn't very effective in the outfield.. and didn't seem to be able to come out of whatever funk he was in.. Mercado, with a chance to step up and take charge.. shrunk from the challenge.. Naylor was a high energy low performance model that, in the end, couldn't displace Jake Bauers who, for lack of any explanation was afforded more chances than his performance deserved.. Bobby Bradley had a killer spring after reinventing himself physically.. but, resorted to the three true outcomes mantra that challenges him.. and that he essentially fails to avoid... The names are all different.. but the result is the same.. with a chance to succeed.. not succeeding followed. This lack of success is different than failure... Finding out who can't succeed.. is what makes this season not a failure..

My biggest disappointment.. the way Karinchak flamed out.. I believe (and there's more to it that just that) that Karinchak can and will return in 2022, wiser.. healthier and with a better understanding of what it takes to succeed..

My biggest surprise is how Sam Hentges and Emmanuel Clase have taken on highly affirmative roles in the bullpen.. perhaps Gose as well.. but.. maybe too soon for him..

Thoughts?

Note: this might be a better thread on it's own.. disappointments and surprises for the 2021 season.. expectations for the 2022 season.. IDK..

Injuries to the rotation killed this season. Because of covid, the SPs that were forced into the rotation were at least a year away from being ready.

We also began the season with no centerfielder. Trying to patch that problem screwed up both Amed and Gimenez.

The Bauers extension of a tryout...which I supported...was an epic failure. Too many players played out of position, and the FO failed to make decisions. The two they did make early...Bauers and Allen didn't work.

Season ending injuries to Naylor and Sandlin did not help.

We ended up with a roster full of utility players and fourth/fifth OFs.

But the main problem was the lack of a rotation, followed by failing to make decisions. The FO couldn't stick with anything or anybody.

If the same thing happens to the rotation next season, we will have nearly the same results, although we do have more SP depth that looks to be MLB ready.

Now, hopefully, the FO will finally allow the players to have a true role.

Don't screw around with Amed and Gimenez to start. Make some decisions and cut loose the seemingly never ending list of deadwood. Three, four, five years is a long enough tryout. Quit hoarding prospects, and go out and get some real MLB players to replace the deadwood.

TBH, I was never very high on the Indians chances this season. Not with a slashed payroll like we had. Even before the injuries hit, I thought our roster was crap compared to the White Sox.
Who did we start at 1B - Jake Bauers. In RF - Ben Gamel. Please.

The silver lining was that when the pitching staff went down with injuries, the kids were thrown into the fire - and developed very nicely.
