Today's ESPN article on what the Suns should do in the off season, had some interesting salary points that may give us an indication of what Allen should earn. It discusses Ayton and Bridges and how the Suns can extend them. While Ayton is worth more, I think Bridges value is closer to Allens despite their playing different positions.

"This past season, Bridges ranked eighth among small forwards in overall real plus-minus, fifth in defensive real plus-minus and fourth in win shares with 8.98. The Suns would be smart to overpay Bridges (four years, $100 million) but with the trade-off of not giving Bridges a player option in the last year of the contract.

In December, Toronto Raptors forward OG Anunoby signed a four-year, $72 million contract but with a compromise that the forward could become a free agent after the third year as a result of a player option."

I think somewhere between Anunoby and 4/100 M is where Allen should fall.

I think OG's number might be really close to what Allen gets.

Hopefully closer to OG's contract. Not to say that Allen isn't worth more, I'm just thinking about all the future deals we'll have to give Okoro, Garland, and Sexton if we decide to keep him.

I would be happy with 18-20 mil per year.

Folks are afraid sexton's next contract sets the tone for garland and okoro. No. It's allen's.

Center Salaries 2021-2022:

(1) Rudy Gobert - $35,344,828
(2) KAT - $31,650,600
(3) Joel Embiid - $31,579,390
(4) Nikola Jokic - $31,579,390
(5) Nikola Vucevic - $24,000,000
(6) Myles Turner - $18,000,000
(7) Clint Capela - $17,103,448
(8) Jonas Valanciunas - $14,000,000
(9) Brook Lopez - $13,302,325
(10) DeAndre Ayton - $12,632,950
(11) Jusuf Nurkic - $12,000,000
(12) Dwight Powell - $11,080,125

Clint Capela's contract should be JA's ceiling IMO.

The same ESPN article I quoted earlier had this to say about Ayton:

"The rules of a rookie extension prevent Ayton from signing a five-year extension unless it is for the maximum salary allowed: $168 million. Will Phoenix be willing to commit to the same type of max extension that Bam Adebayo, Joel Embiid, Karl-Anthony Towns and Anthony Davis signed previously?

While the $28 million cap hit in 2022-23 would be deemed as an overpay, the back end of the contract is likely to be team friendly because the NBA is set to get an infusion of national television money in 2024-25. Ayton's $33.5 million salary in 2024-25 would be $5 million less than the projected max salary in that season."

I think because of the expected TV money, Allen gets around 4/90 M with no player option.

If I was running the Cavs, I would be more interested in trading Allen for a good wing and signing Hartenstein as my sometime center. We just watched the NBA finals where Ayton was often the only big man on the floor for either team that couldn't shoot 3's. Allen's value is somewhat diminished in the modern NBA. If some team (Charlotte?) is interested in a sign and trade, I would strongly consider it.

Your example proved exactly why Allen *should* resign. Ayton being the only big is when Phoenix started losing. Saric getting hurt effected a ton for the Suns. Kaminsky was a laughable replacement. The Bucks had Giannis, Portis and Lopez all impacting this series...and *won* in 6, despite not having home court.

I don’t know why people are throwing around numbers like 18 or 20 million for Allen. He’s not that good, folks.

It could be a play to either get teams not to bid on Allen so we get him for cheaper. Remember RFA offer sheets usually happen at the very end of free agency when money is left over. Team's initial plans are to try to get unrestricted free agents so they aren't left with nothing if it doesn't pan out.

The flip side is an opposing team saying they will throw a huge offer at Allen might be to try to get the Cavs to look at unrestricted free agent options and make the Cavs less likely to match.

The Bucks could spread the floor with Portis and Lopez at the 3pt line while Giannis could run the point. The flexibility of size and shooting was what helped the Bucks win the series.

I think the difference is that Capela signed that contract in 2018, so if you see them as comparable players, Allen's new contract should be larger than that, with the usual escalations each year.

Allen's not comparable to Capela. He's not as good as Myles Turner either. The only reason to lock him up for $20 million is if you think he'll improve significantly in coming years. Which he might, he's 22.

Good point and it's my fault for not clarifying. I personally think Capela is much better. He got that contract coming off of a great playoff run with the Rockets in which he outplayed Gobert and KAT. Dude was a beast but unfortunately was a terrible matchup against the Warriors.

That $17m or $85/5years should be his ceiling not whatever Capela's contract adjusted to the new tv deal.

Can anyone give me some ideas where Jarrett Allen is going to improve in the future? Because I'm just not seeing it. Not that he's a bad player, but his per 36 min stats are basically flat across his entire career. I don't see room for growth, just a steady solid contributor.
