I'm not so sure about that. If they don't protect that arm someone will certainly knab it.

He's missed so much time and they have a ton of talent overall... I dont see a kid, who has some upside, who has missed so much time is worth protecting...

He's 23 and missed a season due to the pandemic and then to TJS. He was our best SP prospect not to long ago and still has tremendous upside. There are plenty others to remove from the 40 man over him. He embodies everything worth protecting and it would be senseless to unprotect him just before you reap the possible benefits of his talent.
Wasnt he eligible last year too?

I believe he was but he was also a lot closer to his injury/ surgery.
Don't forget, once a player is drafted he has to remain on the 40 man roster. Many teams will shift the injured player to a 60 day IL once action starts but there is no IL during the off season. A drafted (& still injured) Hankins or other player would still tie up a 40 man spot during the off season.
Understand I am not suggesting he should (or should not) be protected.
I'm only hoping he has the opportunity to perform during the 2nd half of the season so the CLE FO can make a well informed decision to protect/ not protect.

excuse me, I should have said: with the Rule 5 its remain on the 40 man during the off-season and 26 man roster during the season (or 60 day IL)

if he shows he can remain healthy and begin to regain his form.. he should be protected..
