So, if we just traded away 2 guys who hit lefties and we face 40% lefties in our division, why wouldn't we trade away 2 more lefties? 4 is better than 2 ... and 2 is better than 0 but why would we even trade away the first 2 in the first place, if that would have helped the team compete better?
We really don't know. Cesar had a reasonable option at $6 mill (for most other clubs) but with younger kids, management wanted to clear the path for them and saw a need in AAA pitching next year (to avoid rushing more upside prospects that they had to do this year with Mejia and Hentges and next year with injuries to Cantillo, Morris, Hankins, Vargas). Luplow just couldn't stay healthy and they went with youth in Ramirez (they were not going to roster both come this fall) and again added more AAA pitching depth.
This off-season roster decisions will be interesting. I have been pushing Amed to CF for a long-time (and giving him time to adjust vs just throwing him out there). However, with Straw, his value is either at 2nd or SS or utility guy (as he is not a LF power hitter). Gimenez has hit .290 and .275 the last two months. Yes, he struggled early this season due to Indians adjusting his leg lift, I believe. I wouldn't be surprised to see him up soon (after Toronto visit which Mandy said was a VISA issue) to see if SS is his at BOY. They may wait a bit to see if Clement has anything, first.
However, come June (after Super 2 status if that isn't negotiated out of CBO), Arias WILL be up at either SS, 2nd or 3rd (if Ramirez isn't signed and thus traded). He has hit .286 and .310 the last two months. If you have an infield combo of Ramirez, Gimenez and Arias, where does Amed get pushed to? And, will you pay him that at $4+ milion (ARB 2) as a utility guy (especially if $6 million is too much for a 2nd baseman)?
So, it comes down to value. For most clubs, they would be happy with Amed at $4-$5 million as a super utility guy vs lefties. However, Indians have a glaring need in LF to fill either in FA or a trade. If Amed can be packaged with a prospect or two for a starting LF, his value is then maximized for a cash stingy team. This isn't that I am anti-Amed. He is hitting .287 last 30 games and .323 last 15. It is he has 2-years left and may get pushed to the side by younger, more controllable ($ and years wise) prospects soon. If he cannot be packaged for a LF (or another pitching prospect) this offseason then he will have a roster space created by cutting Chang and DFA Clement with the hopes to package him to a mid-level contender by June/July to free up the space needed for Arias and/or Freeman.
The name of the game right now for Indians is $s and years. They liked Straw as he only has just over 1 year of service time. They are not going to kick him to the side for Amed. Arias is clearly in our future. Gimenez will be given another shot. Freeman could have competed for 2nd next year to start the year but will be slowed a bit due to injury. Amed is just running out of time for OUR team but is useful to other teams that can pay more for a utility/middle-of-the road type guy.
