Moves the Indians should make for the 2nd half

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Nope, Baddoo would have been in AA during 2020. So, I don’t see this as a similar situation.

I don’t believe there’s any chance a team would take Valera.

If some team wants to give Valera a spot on their 26-man roster, more power to them.

He has less than 350 PA in professional baseball.

It would effectively ruin the young man’s career.

The drafting team has nothing invested in him and could catch lightning in a bottle. It's not unusual to protect your top prospects.

If there’s a team that wants to waste a roster spot, more power to them.

If we have the 40-man spot, by all means, protect him. I just don’t think there’s any need to freak out or make any major moves to clear spots. The 40-man tends to sort itself out despite the cries of some that there will be trouble.

Or break it wide open to flourish.. you just don't know what his future portends.. One thing is certain.. he is a top 50'ish prospect that plays a spot that the Indians are in dire need of.. The risk of losing him because he plays A ball is pretty weak..

I’m not going to sweat it either way.

Eh... I'll admit I have no idea what the Rule 5 Draft is going to look like after the COVID year, but if I saw a prospect like Valera unprotected, I know I'd want the Indians to try and figure out a way to bring him in--either you scored a serious talent for free, or you return him back to the original team. Seems like a low-risk, high-reward maneuver.

That's what I was thinking. No matter how high an organization may be on another team's prospect, you can't take a 20-year-old kid in A ball and have him tag along on a major league roster doing nothing except taking batting practice and skip an entire season of competition. You would ruin him.

Or would you? Isn't that almost exactly what happened to most of the top prospects in baseball last year when the minor league season got canceled? And yet we have some guys in A ball who didn't play at all last year who are doing really well. And the guys who weren't top prospects just went home. Did we just ruin an entire generation of prospects? It doesn't look like it.

I’m not seeing the similarities between the situations you’re describing

Valera is the perfect bubble example.

He isn't a plus plus defender or runner. He has a ton of helium in his bat though. Is that enough for a team? Maybe in a DH in a NL world.. Also it's hard to imagine he could do worse than Ka'ai Tom is doing this year.

I think you protect him and Rocchio as far as the non-pitching A ballers are concerned. But maybe you trade them instead.....

Edit. It will also cost 100,000 to acquire a rule 5 pick, that won't be much of a deterrent - even the Indians coughed it up for Stephan.

A Rule 5 pick who has not played above A level and is not ready to contribute at the ML level would just be stashed on the bench for a year with no playing time; he would only take batting and fielding practice.

Last year the Indians had some guys (I think Valera was one) who went to the alternate site, took batting and fielding practice, and played some intrasquad games for half a season.

Looks similar to me, not identical but similar.

Actually, I think the rule is the selectee has to be on the major league roster the entire season. I don't think he physically has to travel with the team. The Indians could pick a guy and have him spend the entire season in Goodyear working out with the ALC squad and getting individual instruction. They would be short one player on their major league team, but if they are sure the Rule 5 selection will have a Michael Brantley career starting in three years it might just be worth it.

That would almost certainly something the MLBPA would file a grievance against, no?

do the mlb rosters go back to 25 next season?

doubtful...

The move to 26 players on the regular roster was agreed to months ahead of COVID even being heard of..
That increase was in conjunction to limit the size of pitching staffs (to 13 players) and alter the September call up structure (from anyone on the 40 roster down to 28).

Then Covid hit & they went with 30 man rosters in 2020 (without limits on pitching staff size or any Sept callups).

2021 is 26 person roster but no limits on pitching staff size & the return of limited Sept callups...

More likely 2022 will have 26 man rosters & limits on pitching staff size & limited Sept callups (as was the original play when agreed to in late 2019)..
