Moves the Indians should make for the 2nd half

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Spot on, Johan Santana another.

Santander worked out because they stashed him on the 60-day DL recovering from a shoulder injury.

What do you think of Bracho and Rocchio when it comes to be added to the 40 man?

Completely unnecessary.

Neither of those guys should be on a big league roster. I wouldn't be surprised if they added one of them, depending on how the rest of the year plays out.

But I don't think either are a huge risk of being selected.

As to placing the RULE 5 guy on the IL...the draftee must actually be active for at least 90 days. This keeps teams from drafting players, then placing them on the injured list for the majority of the season. For example, if a Rule 5 draftee was only active for 50 days in his first season with his new club, he must be active for an additional 40 days in his second season to satisfy the Rule 5 requirements.

I think the Rule 5 draft concerns are very much overblown in this forum because of the Santander and Oviedo picks. The other 29 teams likely find themselves in comparable situations of a "prospect crunch" after the loss of the 2020 MiLB season.

I've said the very same, but I don't have the list of every team to verify said statement. I even mentioned that it could be possible the Indians loose a player or 2 and choose a better player or 2. I wouldn't bet on that, but it seems like a possibility.

Wouldn't the team have to be under the 40 man limit in order to be eligible to draft? I don't see with the talk of a roster crunch leaving an open roster spot available "in case" another player they like is unprotected with them so far down in the draft order.

We are not trading Hernandez to the White Sox. We are not going to eat salary to get a better prospect, because we already have more prospects than we can roster.

Who said it had to be a rostered prospect?

Its a short market for 2B, matter of factly ruling out such a deal as impossible is nonsense.

Nobody said it had to be a rostered prospect. Consider the source I guess.

Despite prospect "rankings" as of now Santander performed better than Valera is now as well.

If someone can select a Valera or a Bracho (I think Rocchio is an outsider roster shot) and ride with them all year in 2022, then good for them and bad for us.

Cody Morris, Will Benson, Oscar Gonzalez and some AA pitchers are more likely to get nabbed over Valera and especially Bracho.

If George Valera was exposed to the Rule 5 Draft, he would be the top pick.

I don’t believe he’d even get picked
I completely disagree. He was just named the 51st best prospect in baseball by Fangraphs. You don't think Baltimore or Pittsburgh among other bottom-feeding teams would add him? Detroit took Akil Baddoo despite him having not played above High-A ball and he has produced a 1.0 bWAR for them so far at the age of 22.

I think he would be taken too, but it would really be a gamble to take him. His injury concerns might be a plus in this case..

Only has 1 double, 2 triples and 2 homers on the year - 253/376/386/762 - 6SB 5CS... Even though Freeman is a "lower" prospect it is a 100% slam dunk he'd be taken before Valera if not protected.

However if someone really wants to draft someone this far away from the show when there will be more suitable ML options, I say have at it. If Bracho is picked when left unprotected, go Bracho go.

According to MLB.com's prospect rankings, 14 players that ranked in their Organizational #9-15 rankings were left unprotected. No one greater than #8 was left unprotected.

According to MLB.com, "Over the past six seasons, all 59 Top 100 prospects who were eligible got roster spots"

Makes me think they'd definitely protect Valera, although this year could get nuts because of the aforementioned cancel of the 2020 MiLB season

The below are the 3 that were selected

#13 Jose Soriano- Angels- selected by Pirates
#13 Akil Baddoo- Twins- selected by Tigers
#13 Jose Rivera- Astros- selected by Angels (returned before start of season)

Nope, Baddoo would have been in AA during 2020. So, I don’t see this as a similar situation.

I don’t believe there’s any chance a team would take Valera.
