They were both wrong.

You don't joke someone's medical condition.

My wife lost her hair because of a medical issue (chemotherapy for breast cancer). It took courage for her to leave the house without covering her head, it would have crushed her if even one person laughed at her because of it. Yet here Chris Rock made a joke about Will Smith's wife in front of millions of people.

I still would like to know what Chris Rock said after the joke, before he said "that was a nice one". I still can't make it out, but I think Will Smith got up after the second comment.
I think he said something like "I could.." or something like that. I took it as he was going to say something like "I could have done way worse or I could have talked about your marriage"

Will Smith was wrong. The joke wasn't funny. It's a 30yo joke. Jada has always had super short hair so I don't get why it's relevant in 2022. Is it a dig at her medical condition? Maybe. Is it OK to slap a comedian because you get your feelings hurt? No.

I’m sorry you and your wife had to go through that. Completely empathize with both of you. I can see how a woman in particular would be self-conscious about that.

But guys like Chris Rock DO make jokes about this. At every roast ever done, people make fun of sexuality, personality, standing in society and health conditions. And it’s done in good faith. Guarantee Chris Rock had said far worse things about himself and his friends in the previous 24 hours. That’s what comedians do. It’s their job.

That said, it’s her right, your right, your wife’s right and anyone else’s right to be offended by it and not take it as a joke. Totally understandable. Not everyone finds that humor funny.

To stand up and walk 100 yards away and slap someone in the face about it is ridiculous though. Especially considering that he was laughing initially and smirking after.

Here's Jason Whitlock's take. He used to be a sports reporter.

Interesting.

Whitlock’s opinions always seem to come out of left field. Maybe it’s because I don’t read him regularly.

He consistently looks at things from an angle I haven’t, even if I completely disagree with about 40% of what he’s saying. I can dig that.

Why didn't she smack Rock?

How often has a guy been forced into a confrontation over his lady's virtue?

This is 2022.

If a woman has an issue with a joke, or some dude for whatever reason, she needs to fight him herself.
This is why I am a huge proponent of trans men vs women UFC fighting.

I won’t rest until it’s done.

Complete aside: folks are going to look back on Kanye's insanely public harassment of Kim Kardashian and ask why no one did anything about him being a toxic abusive psychopath. It will be like how folks now look back at Marilyn Manson. Hopefully it happens sooner than later, because what he is doing is not mental illness, its abuse and likely a precursor to him doing something even worse.

It really should happen, too. Fighting is based on weight and who is pound for pound better, if they both are the same weight, why not? Of course I also think much of this hullabaloo is over nothing.

Yeah, his takes on Kanye were off. That dude is hiding something much more malignant behind a bipolar diagnosis. Bipolar= Sympathy, defense
Narcissism, psychopathy, sociopathy= fear, avoidance

Frustrating to see people defend him.

Agree.

Dogs vs people too. I want octopi in there as well. Can you swim for 30 minutes? Get in the tank, fuck you.

I want all out gladiation. Tired of the political bullshit.

I think the second comment was Chris Rock about to say it's genuinely or it was gentle then switch to that was one of the nicer ones but I think it comes out as it was a nice one.

Yeah you're right. I was talking about after the slap when Will was yelling at him. Chris starts saying something then stops and says Ok

Most stand up comics are use to hecklers so his last comments after Will Smith yelling was him about to turn into his mode to shut up a heckler but decides not to. I think it's usually real mean so the heckler just decides to leave.

I'm sure there has been tons of shit said over the years at those awards shows that probably hurt someone's feelings, and Smith didn't protest any of that, or boycott the shows, or make public statements about how it was in bad taste and jokes like that shouldn't be made.

In other words, he was perfectly willing to laugh at other people when they were the target of comedic barbs.

I have zero sympathy for his position. That kind of shit comes with the territory of being a celebrity at one of those shows, and he knew it.

Will Smith exposed himself as a piece of shit. Can he get forgiveness for his act? Sure, he should be forgiven the moment there are no more "Slap" memes showing Rock being assaulted anywhere on the internet. Not before that happens. Chris Rock is now publicly humiliated for eternity. Will Smith's punishment should be worse.

She would of smacked Chris Rock, but her hair got in her way.
