Will Smith is a giant narcissist, so any attention is good attention for him.

I also think he felt he had earned this best actor Oscar even before he was given the award. Like this was his night like he was getting a life time achievement award that was preannounced.

That kind of got me thinking about how many actors are in his position to where he can basically create his own production company to vet and create the path for him to get Oscar level scripts. Ali, Pursuit of Happiness, 7 pounds, Concussion, and King Richard were all movies basically made to try to get him a best actor nomination. Collateral Beauty also seems like one they tried to make a Oscar movie and it missed (I never saw it). To be able to go after it so often and have so many shots is a luxury even some of the biggest actors don't have. His ability to rake in money from summer blockbusters on his name alone gives him that leg up.

In other words, he was perfectly willing to laugh at other people when they were the target of comedic barbs.

I mean, he was laughing at his own wife until he looked over and saw she didn't find the joke funny, then he felt he had to act like a tough guy and slap a comedian whose job is to tell jokes.

Seems like he took his anger at being a cuck out on Rock.

I'm sure there has been tons of shit said over the years at those awards shows that probably hurt someone's feelings, and Smith didn't protest any of that, or boycott the shows, or make public statements about how it was in bad taste and jokes like that shouldn't be made.

In other words, he was perfectly willing to laugh at other people when they were the target of comedic barbs.

I have zero sympathy for his position. That kind of shit comes with the territory of being a celebrity at one of those shows, and he knew it.
I am purely projecting thoughts on another person here, and I recognize this. But I sensed that Will was simply grasping an opportunity to make himself look like the big man he didn’t when the narrative was, “Will Smith is a cuck.”

His speech about himself/Richard Williams/his mission from God pretty much wrapped that up.

FTR if Chris Rock said that same thing to him on the street and clearly intended harm, I could completely understand getting pissed. But even then, do you hit someone or do you just say “hey fuck off that’s my wife”?

These women that are saying “I want a man to stand up for me,” as a response to this are the type that get a man killed. Slapping a stranger on the street is what you want?

People are fucking crazy now. Do you believe in toxic masculinity or do you not?

Something about this Jada doesn’t sit well with me.

Ironically, given how Chris Rock didn’t even flinch or skip a beat in his act after the slap, Smith doesn’t end this looking tough at all. He hit Rock pretty damn hard and Rock just laughed it off.

Serious question:

For those with physical/mental health conditions, are you ok with friends making fun of them? What if a comedian knew about it and did it on stage?

True. Chris took that slap like a man.
Chris Rock was the true professional in this situation, and he is the much bigger man than anything Will Smith will ever be.

Unfortunately for Chris Rock he'll be forever remembered for being at the receiving end of a slap meme that will never go away. There should be some way Rock could monetize and make a small profit every time his likeness gets posted as a result of that slap. He'd be the richest man on the planet.

I don't care for it, but you have to simply shrug it off sometimes, because that's how people are. Sometimes it's not even a joke, as it's natural for humans to bully and mock one another, which is why bullying will never go away in school no matter how much well-meaning adults try to set up programs to stop it.

What I've learned is that, most of the time -- if you're calm and take the time to explain to someone that you don't care for that sort of thing -- they'll apologize and stop. If they continue to be a douche, then you just have to let it go. Having meltdowns almost never helps a situation. As someone with autism, I'm all too familiar with how meltdowns do not help. I've had a couple of super awkward police encounters, more than one type of Smith slapping, forum bans, and more than one employment firing because of them. Now that I'm in my upper thirties and able to understand and control these sorts of things better, I make it a point to find much better coping mechanisms whenever possible. It's not easy to de-escalate, but it's the only thing that works. And it's why de-escalation techniques are among the first things taught to individuals who work with people in the mental health fields.

That’s what NFTs are for, I guess.

I heard that Bruce Willis was retiring from acting due to dementia and my first thought was, "Well, that explains his movie choices the past few years."

Am I a bad person?

I don't think Chris Rock is taking enough flack for how he announced the winner of the Documentary award. Paraphrasing, he said, "Quest Love and 4 white guys". One of the 4 white guys was pissed. So not only was th moment overshadowed by the Will Smith silliness but then 4/5 winners don't get their names announced.

First the announcement that Bruce Williis is retiring from acting, then the following day the Houston Texans beat writer John McClain retires from journalism. Coincidence?
