Thinking more about the release yesterday and the top three priorities being that the new name must "connect" with the city, "preserve" baseball history and "unite" the community. Guardians is my top choice, but it doesn’t preserve any baseball history here. The two names which have been suggested that meet all three requirements are Buckeyes and Municipals. Because of Ohio State, I don’t see any chance of the team being named the Buckeyes. Therefore, Municipals might be a name to keep a close eye on going forward.

Cleveland Caldwells and the logo is a lightning bolt. If you dont know what I am talking about, look up the story of Ray Caldwell

Personally I am against Spiders & I would embrace almost everything else. Early on I got behind Guardians.

Something for everyone to mull over:
Jeff Ellis over at Locked on Indians main a good point on his podcast today & on twitter yesterday: The current organization has the trademark on Indians, Naps, Broncos & Blues (the last 2 in the baseball sense).

Many others (including Spiders & Guardians) are under trademark to someone or some other entity. For an organization that is very careful on salaries to players it is doubtful it would now pay money to get to use a different name.

He thinks 'Blues' plays in with the state theme with colors (Baseball Reds in Cinci. Football Browns) & it fits the other criteria.

Hard to find fault with that reasoning/ theory.

So, if it is Spiders, are you still with us?

Commodore Caps? Blue Commodore Caps? Blue Commodore Spider Caps? Just trying to please everyone...

Fuck it. I like Cleveland Baseball Team! It has a nice ring to it. The title of the thread is what made me click.

While reading this thread a name came to me. No real connection other than the alliterative value.

The Cleveland Camels. Get Joe Camel out of retirement and you'd have the coolest and most unique logo in baseball. It makes about as much sense and has about as much of a connection as "Cavaliers", doesn't it?

Okay, nevermind.

I like it too. Plus it allows you enormous flexibility from promos, merchandise, etc.

Dolan really liked how Akron handled it’s name change: the concept. I’m just saying be prepared.

Is ‘Firewaters’ offensive? :)

i said a couple of years ago, keep the name, change the mascot.

Posting this with great trepidation and against my better judgement but in keeping with Lee's horrific sense of humor. The name Buckeyes is in the running but with Lee's mascot it could be called the Buckwheats?

Ugh. Mods delete if this crosses a line. I grew up with Spanky and Our Gang reruns.
