Much as I would like Condors, Vultures, or Buzzards I can't see them choosing an animal that feeds on road kill.

They want a name that 1) has some association with the city, 2) something to do with the history of baseball in Cleveland, and 3) unites the community.

So that narrows it down to the Cleveland Steeler Hating Guardian Spiders.

If we’re going to be a bird, at least be the buzzards and get that nostalgia vibes going.

Here for Guardians, Spiders, or Buckeyes in no particular order. Also hear for Cleveland Baseball Club.

I think Buzzards should be more in the running than they are. Its unique, local to Ohio, and kind of cool, but there seems to be no buzz around the name. (no pun intended actually)

With scavenger tendencies. That should just about cover it.

Well, how about the "Cleveland Competitors?" We'd be reviving the tremendous legacy of Ted Stepien's slow-pitch professional softball team!

.... And The Cleveland Steeler Hating Guardian Spiders prepare to take the field:

Tim: Awfully unique name for a baseball team, don't you think Jim?
Jim: Well Tim, you don't wanna know what I think.

Cleveland SHaGS for short.

Austin Powers becomes our unofficial mascot.

In like a decade of existence, the Spiders won a world series, as it were at the time, and played for another. That's almost as much as the Indians have accomplished in 120 years. If the Spiders owner didn't also buy the St. Louis Browns and send all of Cleveland's best players there, the Spiders don't go out of business and are probably in the NL when the American League becomes a major league, meaning the Indians never exist. They even have two hall of famers, including the namesake of the Cy Young award. That's enough history for it to be the only name they could choose that I wouldn't despise. Anything else might as well be the Lake County Captains or Akron Rubber Ducks.

I think if more people knew that the Spiders were a professional team in Cleveland 125 years ago, had Cy Young on the team, and won the championship,. more people would be for the name.

I dont understand why its not the clear favorite. Because so many people hate Spiders? I hate Irish People, didnt stop Notre Dame from choosing their mascot.

I just find the Spiders name to be...lame. I like the history and everything, but the name itself just makes me want to yawn.

They'd have to nail the branding for me to be content with it.

Many people hate snakes just as much as spiders, yet Arizona named their team after a snake. I get that Spiders isn't the most exciting name, but I don't get the whole "people don't like spiders" or "spiders are icky" as a reason to not go with hit. It has history and is unique to professional sports. It is not a bad choice if you ask me.

It's a C+ or so. I just think the fact some people HATE spiders more than anything else is probably enough to scratch it from the list.

Some of these names they're supposedly looking into would be absolutely horrid.

Could you imagine if they went with Warriors as the new name? Clevelanders could never make a "Warriors blew a 3-1 series lead" joke ever again - it would also be about our baseball team.

Like someone just posted above, I find the name 'spiders' to be lame.

Arizona is a good example. If they were the Arizona Snakes I would think that name is lame. Diamondbacks has a much better sound to it than 'snakes.'
