I think more than anything you have to think about nicknames more than the name.

Like sure Commodores sounds ok until we end up the Cleveland Commies and have hammer and sickle patches on hats.

The reason we like it because there was once a franchised named Spiders in cleveland...over 100 years ago is for sure old. Both of your reasons are old, not weak.

It being a team over 100 years ago is old. It being a team that has no association to the current franchise makes it weak. Regardless of how we label it, it doesn't really check any of the boxes the team says they're looking for.

Black widows
Sea serpents
Hydras

Would be in my short list for unique names

OMG I love it! Our mascot could be Bernie Sanders sitting out in the cold

Hammerheads could be turned into a cool mascot, sort of combines industrial/construction with water. And while they don't live in Lake Erie, I don't think Tigers live in Detroit.

Blue something could be a nod to blue collar which could play nicely I guess.

My buddy said something to me... perhaps the Cleveland Smiths like a nod to blacksmith, metal worker and a nod to the steel industry. I didn't hate that completely.

Steelhead are the mightiest of the trout. And the most noble fish in all of Lake Erie.
Interesting but 1) they are prey, not predators and humans eat them, 2) the Steel part makes you think of the Steelers, and 3) I don't know if the community can unite around a fish and a trout certainly has nothing to do with Cleveland baseball history.

If they are serious about the baseball history part then it has to relate to the Indians somehow because the Indians are ALL they history we have until you get back to the 19th century. But they said absolutely no Native American names or affiliations so I have no idea how they're going to come up with something that connects to Cleveland baseball but has nothing to do with Indians.

Go with the name Cleveland Progressive. Liberals will love it. Use the font for Progressive Insurance as the logo. Charge them $50 million a year for naming rights.

Jupiter Hammerheads are a Minor League team in Florida...used to go those games quite a bit as a kid during the short stint I lived there. Their branding is pretty cool.

Hammerheads is good. It's an intimidating, predatory animal. The team would be know as the Hammers for short. How about Triphammers?

We could double our payroll! Flo could be the logo.
