I’m confused by Cleveland sports fans that have never heard of the Guardians.

They have been in countless “hype” videos for both Cavs and Indians games in stadium and on tv. They were in the player intro video for the Cavs for at least 2 years during Lebron era. The Cavs even had the guardians on their shorts for one of their alternate jerseys 3-4 years ago.

I think I’ve only driven on that bridge once in my life and like many here, have been to Cleveland countless times, but the guardians are pretty well shoved down your throat often.

Still the best name if you ask me though.
I never pay any attention to hype videos. So, maybe that’s it. Not only had I never personally noticed them, but I’d never even heard anyone talk about them until the last six months.

How do you explain this name to people outside of Cleveland (and many in Cleveland it looks like) in a way that doesn't draw odd looks?

"They're 4 43 foot statues on a 90 year old bridge that connects Ohio City to Downtown Cleveland. You can see 2 of them if you're standing at the entrance of Progressive Field"

Pretty sure on the last part, but not positive.

The same way you explain what a Laker is doing in Los Angeles, Packer is, Brown I'd, what's a 49, why are there multiple teams named after sox, what Clippers are, etc etc.

Name it. Explain it & with time; everyone will roll with it. Why?

In the words of Joe Dirts Daddy, the great Earl Nunemaker "it just does".

For the curious, here's some history behind the Guardians of Traffic:

The Mormon Tabernacle Choir might disagree. As would Jerry Joseph and the Jackmormons.
He thinks Footloose was a documentary chronicling the start of Kevin Bacon's movie career.

Of course people around the country (and a lot of people in Cleveland) won't understand what the name refers to. So I suggest an alternative; the Cleveland Crossing Guards. Or the Cleveland Traffickers.

This reminds me of my favorite Johnny Carson joke, back in the 90's.

Did you hear the NBA Washington Bullets changed the name of their team? Yeah, they no longer wanted to be associated with crime. So from now on they're simply going to be known as "The Bullets".

It also is literally the opening scene of Major League. I assume most posting in this section of the forum have seen that movie at least a dozen times.
