Spring Training Games thread!

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
RP depth prospect Kevin Kelly hitting 93/4 from a low slot was nice to see. He was upper 80s, barely touching 90 and performed through AA with that. Might be a true RP prospect if he can hold this velo.

Otoh, gotta say I've come away disappointed with Miko in my ST looks. Reading scouting reports, I got the impression he was a Karinchak light.

Shaw topped out at 91 today

Chang with GIDP, K and a throwing error. This is our starting 2B

What's the over/under OGonz plays a ML game or several for us this year??? More than 60%?
He swings at everything, that won't work. He does have good barrel control though, but it won't save him. Needs to become more patient or he's going AAAA or KBO.

So impressed with Kwan. Such a smart hitter, love him already.

Yeah.. as soon as OGonz gets two strike.. everything thrown he's swinging or ready to.. truly non-competitive pitches.. he does allow to go by.. but not without some effort to check his swing..

Note, how we were in the top 5 in hitting after 12 games. After 20 games, we ended up 11th in OPS and 6th in AVG. How things change as we get closer to opening day.

Clement, Chang, Miller etc all had good spring though... I hope they continue. Plus JRam and Rosario really didn't do anything this spring and I doubt they will stay that way...

I am not expecting anything from Zimmer and Mercado at the end of the day...

Clippers launch back to back homers (Fermin & Fry) to plate 3 runs in the top of the 5th...

You have to know what guys are being asked to work on in ST to get a better idea on how to judge them in such a strange scenario, especially for guys who know they aren't making the team or have no chance at not being on the team. Often those guys are working on something in game and it doesn't matter about the production.

In this case, we have asked him to work on his slider, cutter, and changeup to try to develop a 3rd plus pitch and he threw a lot of them this spring.

He is predominantly a CB/FB pitcher and I don't think he threw a single CB this spring. I know he didn't today.

Thanks for the context on Miko. I always wondered if he could start because he has so many pitches for a RP.

FanGraphs already had his changeup as a 50/55. And yes I just remember one beautiful curveball the other day where he got a K on.
Is he still ramping up his FB or does it sit low 90s, thought he had mid+ 90s?

Can you tell me anything on Kevin Kelly and his velo bump? I've followed him since college and was glad we took him. Smart pitchability type, but with 93 from that slot, is he a real RP to follow for bullpen depth now?

His career SO% is like 23%. He hit .293 with a .329 OBP and 31 bombs. I don't give a shit what he does or doesn't swing at. If he can get close to that kind of production then we're golden. I know that our OF is too deep and talented right now to squeeze some AB's in for him, but they should consider it.

But he can't get that kind of production at the MLB level with that kind of swing at everything approach...

He has to show he has worked on his holes in the swing this season. IF he does that, I don't think we will hold him at AAA anymore...

How do you know what he can or can't do at the major league level? You can guess all you want, but his numbers are what they are. It's not like he would be replacing an OBP machine that hits 25 HR a season. So yes, he could and likely would struggle, but the chance is pretty good that he can hit better than either Mercado or Zimmer.

You're just guessing as well by looking at some of his numbers. In general players with his profile haven't fared well at the majors offensively. And he's not providing defense.

He'll have an opportunity to show he can put up a better approach at AAA. He's still young. For now I think Mercado makes sense on our roster as someone who doesn't play every day. However even Amed and Clement can reduce the need for Mercado although I expect Amed gone at the deadline.

He's already showed what he can do at AAA and I'm not the one making any kind of guesses here bud. I'm saying his performance has been interesting and quite good actually which IMO should earn him an opportunity on this team that lacks any real corner OFers. I specifically stated that he is also likely to fail, but we don't know until we know........ya know.

Amed and Clement in LF is a fucking dumb idea and only happening because of desperation. If we had anything resembling a corner OFer it wouldn't even be a topic.

We have to remember that some current players are placeholders until others are ready in the minors to be full time major leaguers…

That day is coming soon for a couple of the bats…
