The 2020 Cleveland Indians

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Is there concern that his presence will be missed in that minor league development period?

Regardless, it seemed like if they didn't make a move to promote him to the majors that another team would've poached him away, sooner rather than later.

This is definitely the large backfill task.

I'm curious if they'll give Luke Carlin a role as a rover/overall Minor League Savant. Seems like he's well thought of, maybe not as a pitching coach per se.

Tony Arnold is another guy who has been around a while.

Do they need SP depth? They probably have the most SP depth in baseball

Clayton Kershaw, Walker Buehler, Kenta Maeda, Ross Stripling, Dustin May, Tony Gonsolin, Julio Urias. And I would assume there is mutual interest to bring back Ryu as well

Every team could use help in the bullpen, but the Dodgers are pretty good there as well

Kershaw - Declining
Buehler - Rising
Maeda and Stripling - Move from Rotation to BP for a reason.
May and Gonsolin - Unproven
Urias - who knows what happens was a shut down reliever this year likely best Dodgers had.

Bullpen - Kenley died, Kelly sucks, Urias was best reliever and may be moved to rotation, rest are scrubs.

Yeah Pitching is a more dire need then a upgrade at SS.

You said they need SP depth, but there are 7 starters there ranging on the spectrum from ace to more than serviceable in the backend of the rotation. 8 if they re-sign Ryu. They are so deep there, that a few of them will have to pitch out of the bullpen.

Dodgers were #1 in SP ERA and #2 in SP WAR. #5 in Bullpen ERA and #9 in Bullpen WAR

Never said anything about Lindor or upgrading SS. It's moreso a testament to how loaded the Dodgers are from their veterans, or emerging stars, to their prospects.

Edit- After 2 World Series losses and a 106 win season ending in the NLDS, I expect the Dodgers to come out swinging in free agency and in trades to try to get back and win the World Series.

Ryu is as good as gone. Dodgers aren't resigning him. Long history of injury problems, was great this season but the injury problems and age mean hes likely moving on. The Dodgers primary focus this offseason should be pitching. They have depth every where. But some of those guys are just depth. I would be shocked if Stripling is brought back. They need another anchor in the rotation with Buehler and the declining Kershaw. The rest of the guys are just good depth or unproven. The Bullpen is even more banged up. Jansen fell off a cliff, Kelly looks like a waste of money, Urias is likely going to be treated like Maeda, Stripling (If brought back) and go from rotation to bullpen throughout the season. They lack another top tier SP talent when/if Ryu walks, and have no legit shut down guy in the pen.

I imagine the Dodgers and the Yankees will be the front runners for Gerrit Cole.

Stripling is still under control, next year is either his final year of minimum team control of his first year of arbitration. He's been rock solid for them, at worst he'll end up in the bullpen and make a few starts through the season as needed

My main point in the OP was that Dodgers get brought up every time a big name is available in trade. But are they ever really involved in the trade talks. They're often used as leverage. Just looking at the state of their roster. I believe they're just being used as leverage here. Until they're actually pull the trigger on a "blockbuster" trade in the offseason. I will always view them as being leverage for other teams in trade and for agents in free agency. Just hasn't been Friedman's style.

I'd be stunned if Cole didn't end up the LA Angels...

If you could negotiate with Seager to agree to an extension (let's say in the 6 years, $100m range a la Alex Bregman), would you agree to a package centered around Corey Seager + Keibert Ruiz + ?

After Seager's down 2019, maybe he is open to security rather than entering free agency as the #4 player at his own position?

The Angels are expected to go very hard after Cole and Ken Rosenthal has even labeled them as the favorites at this point to land him.

Seager is represented by Scott Boras. He will be hard to get on a reasonable contract. I want Gavin Lux.

Which is why I think the rumors are just to drive Lindors price up with other teams. Much like Indians don't need to trade Lindor. The Dodgers don't need Lindor. So Indians could very well want Lux but the reason Dodgers never make blockbusters under Friedman is because they hold onto top prospects. Its really a big market team run like a small market.

In theory its like the TB Rays with the ability to keep their star talent once they hit FA. Thats how Friedman runs the team. Over the years Dodgers have been trashed for not making the big move but the reason they have had sustained success is because they held onto the Bellingers, Seagers, Buehlers. Its really a terrible fit trade wise for both sides. If Indians deal him my best bet is ATL making a huge offer because they have the farm system to do so and have the need at SS. Dansby Swanson has been nothing but a dissapointment for them.

Atlanta is flush with pitching prospects and two outfield prospects that are not likely ready for the beginning of 2020. Pitching is not a need for the Indians. You don't trade Lindor and not get a ready hitter for 2020. Atlanta is a team you trade Lindor for if you are rebuilding. The Indians are not rebuilding.

I would be interested in what you think Atlanta can trade that also helps us in 2020.

Young controllable pitching that is ML ready helps the Indians. Gives them flexibility to flip Kluber, Salazar or Carrasco for other needs. Both of the top OF specs that you claim are so far away will debut in 2020 at some point. Also in a package for Lindor the Braves moving Austin Riley wouldn't be so shocking. Alex Anthouplous has an affinity for Donaldson who crushed it for the Braves last season.

So if you don't think a package of Riley + Wright + Pasche/Waters doesn't help now and in the future idk what to tell you. I'm not a Indian fan. But Braves can send them a very fair package for now and the future. Braves would be more willing to move top talent then the Dodgers who only players from the 2nd tier of prospects in their system. Although 2nd tier specs in LAs system are usually better then top tier in some systems.

Salazar & 50 cents of loose change gets you a cup of coffee at this point...
Nothing more...

If Salazar is still on the Tribe 40 man/ in the Tribe organization come Nov 22, 2019 I would be completely stunned
