The 2020 Cleveland Indians

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Urban - thanks for your projections.
I think you over spent for the Tribe. Most projections I have seen suggest the Tribe has @$14M available to spend & maintain last season's spending.

I have to think part of that money will be held in reserve for acquiring a piece at the trade deadline. I also believe some of that money will be directed toward a contract extension for Clevinger (to lock in costs and hopefully get another year of control).

This will be an interesting off-season for following the Tribe. I suspect there will be a couple minor deals that look much larger in hindsight (a la Gomes last off season). The 1st insights we will get as fans will be once the 40 man roster is locked in later in Nov (ahead of the winter meetings & R5 draft)..

Then you will get:
Tyler Clippard 1yr 3M
Pablo Sandoval 1yr 4M
Nick Markakis 1 yr 3M

This has definitely been their move in past years. I do wonder if they have a different approach now after their slow April/May last year and the emergence of the Twins.

Hopefully an extension is in the works for Clevinger. With their past extensions, that news seems to come out within a month of Opening Day

Why spend a dime on Pablo??? He was a disaster when not with San Fran.
If given the choice of Pablo or Yu Chang, I select Chang (or another internal option) & use those funds in another manner.

As for Markakis - has Atlanta turned down the $6M option ($2M buyout) for 2020?? Don't recall seeing that announcement

Just an option if spending less than the $14 million you mentioned.

Atlanta didn't turn it down. This was just in case they do.

Hard pass on Sandoval and Markakis.

Internal options could be just as good or better than either.

Markakis wouldn't be a bad pickup since he is still a solid player going into his age 36 season mostly because of the fact Naquin is out for awhile and having a veteran like him on the team wouldn't hurt at all, but with the 15 area mil to play with between free agency and in season (by projection) I really doubt that Markakis is a guy we need. I wouldn't be mad if we signed him but honestly not a fit money wise for this roster.

Where did you come up with the 15 mil to play with? Have they said they're going to be spenders outside of arbitration?

right now the projected payroll for next season is 15 mil less than this year, so everyone projects the Indians to run 2020, cause they are contenders, at the same payroll, so that 15 mil project is from that

Keep in mind that Christian Arroyo is out of options, so I would be surprised if he doesn’t at least make the team as a utility infielder as long as he’s healthy. Expecting Mike Freeman to have the same type of production from last season (dude had a .388 BABIP) isn’t too wise.

Can someone explain why Avisail Garcia is not a target for the Tribe this off-season??

If it came down to the same amount of money to get 1 of EE or AGarcia, I would be picking Garcia as I know I get someone that is younger, faster running the bases and capable of playing in the OF.

I'm still shaking my head the Tribe didnt try to land him last season when his cost was way down - heck the Rays landed him for 1 yr at $3.5M in the back half of January 2019...

To be fair, Garcia was bad in 2018, and only had 1 good season in his career prior to 2019

I agree with you. The Indians do not need another DH.

What do you guys feel about Yan Gomes? He is a free agent now that Washington declined his option
Would love to bring him back.

Love how Perez performed this year, but a drop-off seems likely to me.

Being able to ride the hot hand between the two would be nice.

so you feel he would be an upgrade over Plawecki? I didn’t think Plawecki did a bad job overall behind the plate with the pitchers. I mean he normally had almost all the young guys it felt like and he seemed to handle them well. Gomes though in theory would be a bigger threat than Plawecki at the plate without a doubt. What would you pay for Gomes though?
