The Jarvis Landry Thread: Bless 'Em

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
I think a lot more went into making the Dolphins a bad offense than they threw to Jarvis Landry a lot.

No doubt, but feeding a relatively inefficient slot receiver 161 times is not a recipe for offensive success.

Again, none of this is to say that Landry is a bad player, but he's not a number one WR and you won't have a good offense if you feed him like one.

Jarvis Landry was catching passes from Jay Cutler on a team coached by Adam Gase. I don't wanna hear about his efficiency. Ask opposing teams about him.

Apparently, in this topic, advanced stats no longer matter. Funny how most of the people here were all in favor of analytics and using advanced stats for evaluation purposes until we traded for a guy who doesn't perform well there, and now stats are completely useless and we should just go with our gut. :chuckle:

Count me as someone that wasn't infatuated with the analytics-dominant regime.

That said, I think you're right- people are just annoyed at the negativity regarding the signing. He's a really good player. I wish we could just be happy we got a good player and not have to talk about how he isn't a #1 receiver. We already have a guy who fits that mold: Josh Gordon. Jarvis should fit in nicely and help this team win games, going by what I've seen. He's going to kill opposing teams on 3rd down, and holy shit I can't say I need to hear anything other than that to get me excited to have him here.

But yeah, I think people just want to like...be happy for once, with the Browns, instead of splitting hairs. I know that's how I feel.

I just don't see how pointing out a player's flaws means that we hate him. I was fine with the trade. This was a team that needed more NFL-caliber talent, and Jarvis Landry is a guy who has proven to be just that. However, I think people see Jarvis Landry the fantasy player and think he's an elite NFL wide receiver. He's not. He's very good, but he's not a top ten wide receiver in the NFL, and he shouldn't be the number one guy on any team. He's been the number one WR in Miami for years now and Miami has been a middling offense and generally bad team during that time, even after hiring Adam Gase, supposed offensive genius.

And yes, we do have a guy who can be a true number one in Gordon. My fear, though, is that we'll just feed Landry 150 times like Miami did and be content to merely not be a godawful offense rather than trying to be a truly good one.

You have to be a not godawful offense first before becoming a good one.

We are starting from ground zero.

This is the NFL. You can go from absolute shit to a playoff team in one offseason. The Browns are basically the only team that has appeared to be unable to make that sort of transition.

I'm sure Jarvis Landry's numbers had nothing to do with Jay Cutler or Adam Gase scapegoating his players.

Well, Cutler targeted him a hell of a lot more than anyone else ever has, so his numbers should have been better.

You are correct. At least we finally have some guys that can play though.

I'm excited for this season.

$15 a year? Hell of a bargain!

$47 mill guaranteed is a lot. Gotta say. I'd bet a lot is in signing $$

"useless" might not have been the best word to use for yds/target, but it's low on the list of stats to me.

However, I don't get the bashing of those who believe in analytics yet don't like 1 stat from it. Just going off of basketball, do you believe in every advanced stat out there? Is every one of them perfect? Of course not.

To me, yds/target really doesn't mean much as long as he's making plays after the catch, which Landry does very well.

Does Landry have trouble getting separation down field? Sure. However, he still makes plays and more importantly, has a good catch%.

The main thing I don't get is that Edelman is widely considered one of the best WR in football (when healthy of course) while Landry gets bashed for having flaws, when they both have the same exact yds/target..
