The Rise of Skywalker spoilers thread

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
This movie was.....

...awful...

Yes, it was better than The Force Awakens... great... achievement unlocked... But I just sat through two and a half hours of motherfuckers losing, running and dying for nothing. They got their asses handed to them, for no reason. That's how the fucking movie started, and that's how it ended. I... can't even right now.. I'm so fucking pissed.

Rian Johnson ... you have failed me..... you .. have failed me...

I will get more into it, but just as I told you all before, last year, when I said people would remember TFA as an unimaginative money grab, well, they won't say that about this film -- simply that -- it was the weird one.

I'm actually looking forward to JJ Abrams coming back... Holy Fuck....

I just watched it too, was going to tag you and ask what you thought. You tend to have the same opinions as I do about these films, just magnified. Seems like it held true again, since I thought there were some really good moments but I ultimately didn't like the film.

Also, the Leia "Mary Poppins" Organa-Solo scene has to be the low point of the entire series. Just... wtf.

Oh...
My..
FUCKING.....
GODDDDDD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I almost walked out of the fucking theater....

I just.. I looked away from the screen, it was so ... mind-boggling stupid.. like .. what .. what were they thinking?!

"I'm Mary Poppins Y'all" indeed..

I was so hyped to see Luke.... childhood hero... and they just killed him off ... because ... Because there was no room in the story for him..

Oh btw... yeah, Rey wasn't trained for shit.. and .. she's still just this amazing badass..

Remember those conversations? Like.. oh, she must've been at the temple with them.. she was there... surely.. she's been trained..

Nope... nope, nope nope... Luke never met her.. She just knows how to do stuff.. Live with it.

p.s.
Rey bested Luke in a "duel" ...

(yawn)

I was joking with my family that they should have gone full Poppins and made a force umbrella to brush out all of the debris in front of her while she was flying back. It's literally the type of moment that ruins entire movies since you can't hold back the disbelief.

The Finn-Rose love story was also possibly the most cringeworthy and unbelievable pairing I've ever seen on screen. I don't know how any part of it could have possibly gotten past the editor's table. The whole "we don't kill the ones we hate... we save the ones we love." *faint RIGHT AFTER YOU SAY IT* was easily worse than Anakin's "I hate sand..." moment.

NYT:
(Mr. Skywalker) found himself full of strong opinions about how the character he has been associated with for 40 years should be presented in “The Last Jedi.”

“That’s the hard part,” Mr. Hamill said. “You don’t want to admit how possessive you’ve become. There are times where you go, ‘Really? That’s what they think of Luke? I’m not only in disagreement – I’m insulted.’ But that’s the process and you thrash it all out.”

....

I agree Mr. Skywalker.. I too am insulted.

Let's go @gourimoko , I'm ready for a pages long, point by point takedown of all of it.

I will say though that I'm still extremely bothered by the fact that JJ Abrams wanted another rebels vs empire story, so he threw out the fact that they control the entire galaxy. Seriously, there isn't a single ship ANYWHERE in the galaxy that can help? Just doing plot backflips to explain away trying to re-do the original trilogy. Imo they should have just re-done Thrawn. How much better would it be than this garbage overarching plotline that we're getting now?

It's coming brother... Lord knows.. its coming...

Learning Snoke is not worth exploring and is a dime store Sidious and Rey's parents are not important. And also there is no reason for the First Order or Resistance to exist:

Everyone taking Kylo Ren at his word RE: Rey’s true lineage is the biggest misdirection in Hollywood history.

Or at least, it should be. Even with the suggestions of that final scene. Anything else would be unacceptable at this point.

The more I think about it, the less I like it sadly. They nailed a ton of stuff and I thought the cinematography for this film was amazing, but sadly there are so many WTF plot decisions and scenes that I just can't get past them. Some of the few off the top of my head:

  • The entire direction of Luke Skywalker's character. The same guy that refuses to kill Vader because he sees some good in him wants to murder his nephew in his sleep a few years later because he thinks Ben's beyond saving? If anything, he should go the other way where he believes Ben can still be good before Ben destroys the temple.
  • Mary Sue Rey, nuff said.
  • Everything involved with Finn was straight filler. If he woke up at the end of VIII from his coma, it would be a better movie for it.
  • How the hell are we supposed to believe that these people rule an entire galaxy, yet all their ships are somehow in one system that was destroyed. Now no one in the entire galaxy has a ship and/or is willing to help? The closest analogy I can think of now would be if North Korea nuked Washington DC and afterwards no one can/will do a thing against them.
  • How the hell is Poe Dameron not arrested at the very least for the shit he pulls? He breaks ranks time and time again, endangers everyone around him and there's just this "Aw shucks, that kid has guts!" attitude.
  • That admiral who had the kamikaze maneuver (forgot her name) was completely unnecessary and there was no emotional connection to her, yet they killed Admiral Ackbar just like that. I guarantee if Ackbar gave his life in that kamikaze maneuver it would have had 10x the emotional gravitas in that moment and it would be looked at as one of the best moments of the entire series.

He'd have been on the radio blowing the plan, he can't help himself. IT'S A TRAP!

If I had to rate the 3 most recent Star Wars movies, right now I would probably go:

VII: 5/10
Rogue One: 9-9.5/10
VIII: I could be talked as low as a 4/10 and as high as a 7/10, so I'll settle with a 5.5/10.

As a big Star Wars fan, it's a bit disappointing that for both VII and VIII, my opinion on both films seems to keep dropping the more time I have to think about them.

I also thought Rogue One was brilliant and today I'd probably rank it as the second best of the entire series (either that or VI), but apparently Disney hated everything about the way that film was made. Doesn't give me much hope for where the series is going in the future.

Man, I can't believe I am saying this. But....

I really miss Lucas. The man made some dumb decisions, but as annoying as Jar Jar is he will never be as stupid as LEIA FLYING THROUGH SPACE ON HER OWN. GOD DAMMIT.

I thought it was great. Too lazy to write out long thoughts now. Went and saw it a second time and a lot that bugged me the first time weren't as bad. Yes, the Leia thing was odd. They should have just made her almost die and use the force to gain strength and survive on the ship. But, w/e, one bad part.

I'm totally on board with the decisions they made regarding the future of the Jedi. The lineage/destiny story line has been played out, imo.
