The Rise of Skywalker spoilers thread

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
No. They are total dog shit. People are just talking themselves into them now because the new movies suck just as badly, albeit in totally different ways.
I kinda agree with you.

If someone were to watch the prequels without any expectations, they're not absolutely terrible.

When I first watched them, highly disappointed. 2nd time i watched, I didn't immediately watch 4,5 or 6 until about 8 months after. They're okay in a sense (6/10) if viewing as a stand alone trilogy.

AotC is fucking garbage.

RotS is a legitimately good Star Wars movie, though. Also Christopher Lee and Ewan McGregor are the only redeeming things about AotC

I honestly didn’t mind TfA too much. Last Jedi definitely killed a part of my fandom though, and honestly I think I just hate the direction they went with this trilogy. So that sort of clouds my judgment.

still seeing this day one.

I see everyone hates them. Why is it? I haven't watched since the early 2000's movies.

No, it isn't. I'd argue it's every bit as bad as the rest of the prequels. Anakin goes from being slightly troubled to mass murdering children over about ten minutes of screen time. The fight at the end is a godawful overuse of CGI in what should be a close-quarters, personal fight filled with emotion. Instead, it's a mindless, twenty minute long fight with boredom as you wait for the inevitable conclusion that you don't even care about because Lucas spent three movies turning Darth Vader into an emo pussy who was impossible to like.

The acting, outside of Palpatine (that dude was having the time of his life and is about the only good thing about the prequels), was as bad as we'd come to expect from the prequels. The cinematography continued to be lazy, as Lucas spend the bulk of the film directing from a chair sipping from a cup of coffee while two people vomited exposition in front of a green screen with the most generic blocking imaginable. Seriously, damn near every scene in this movie is just a couple of people talking in a room (or walking down a hallway and talking) with one person occasionally turning to look out a window. It's remarkably lazy.

It's just a really bad overall movie. Bad writing. Bad direction. Bad CGI. Bad acting. Bad cinematography. Fight scenes that are so overchoreographed and lacking in any form of drama or emotion that they are not even enjoyable.

Oh, but it's PG-13, so it was edgier or something I guess.

Apply this to the other two prequels as well and that's why.

Like, at least the new movies, for as bad as the writing is, have decent acting and are a lot prettier. That alone ranks them slightly above the prequels. The prequels may have had a decent story buried within them somewhere, but the writing was so bad and illogical that anything good never really got to the surface.

ETA: Also, one thing I particularly hate about the prequels compared to the original trilogy is how every decision in the prequels feels like it was made with more interest in selling toys than in creating a compelling world or telling a good visual story. And since so much of it is CGI, nothing feels real like the actual sets and costumes of the original. The world just feels soulless in a way it never does when watching the originals.

Weiss and Benioff, the showrunners for Game of Thrones, have backed out of the Star Wars trilogy they were supposed to write.

The movies have been a shitshow. This is about the 4th or 5th time a director has been fired. Hopefully the streaming stuff is good.

Good thing they rushed through GOT to get a head start on this

To be fair, it's probably a good thing they distanced themselves from D&B. They ruined the best show in TV history by creating a nonsensical finish to a brilliant story.

Sequels better than the prequels? Yeah no.

As the lowest common denominator Star Wars consumer... the prequels were a let down, but I do find myself watching Revenge of the Sith when it comes on TNT (or whatever network carries it). The sequels have been enjoyable and I'll pause to watch those when I see them on network TV.

Well, you could argue about it, but it's also a matter of taste and aesthetics. Just because you personally found the fight scenes lacking in any form of drama or emotion doesn't mean everyone else saw them the same.

I also thought that McGregor's acting was pretty good -- I pretty much enjoyed him whenever he was on screen.

To think they rushed the final two seasons for what should have been the greatest show of all-time for this...

The Mandalorian show looks like it should be really good.
