Trade Deadline Day - 2020

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Here’s a MLB Prospects blog with a pretty negative view on the Tribe’s return in the Clevinger trade.

There are always those fans who criticize deals that are "building for the future", like when you trade back in the NFL draft to get more picks in future years. But then those same fans tend to forget how much of a current rosters was created exactly by such trades made in the past. Patriots supported a dynasty in large part through knowing exactly when to get rid of current talent to restock for the future. It was a continuous process for them, and they reaped the benefits of that for a long time.
if the patriots were the nfl's version of the indians they would have traded brady 15 years ago

Their basic premise is correct -- did not get a "Top 6" player from SD...Tribe took a bunch of guys they really like and believe they can develop....Clev has been a statistically strong performer. I have to chuckle at their indignant pose, but they are entitled to an opinion.

Importance of a single player/QB, Salary caps/floors, franchise tags and the like make it a less than perfect comparison, but we work with what we've got.

@CavsFTW

No we didn't get a top 5 prospect per say, but Naylor and Quantrill just graduated from being prospects and have big league experience.

Quantril is a guy I know Cleveland wanted to draft if they had the chance too. He fits the mold perfectly for what the brass likes to have in the organization. He also a starter but was switched to the bullpen for this season.

If we did this trade last season, all 5 guys would have been in our top 20 prospects so not sure why that is an issue?

Small market teams survive and compete when they are able to develop non top prospects into legit big leaguers. I know we didn't get the top guy, but i have a good hunch, the three prospects we got will play in the pros.

Our catching depth isn't great, but now we have a gold glove winner and his backup got votes for a gold glove as well when he started. Indians organization values that first over hitting from the position.
Cal Quantrill was more of a disappointment than a prospect. A former first rounder who never lived up to his lofty status. In the minors, he put up a pedestrian 4.46 ERA and 1.44 WHIP. Even during his lone quality season (3.80 ERA), he still yielded a 1.47 WHIP.

Scouting reports suggest inconsistency and that his stuff isn't that great to begin with. Struggled mightily against left-handed bats. If there's any weakness in prospect rankings, it's the way former first rounders like Quantrill hold status despite rarely showing the ability to get hitters out.

On the bright side...

He may have some value as a reliever facing righties. And despite the small sample size, he is showing some progress getting lefties out in 2020. Whether or not this is just random noise from a small sample or a legitimate breakthrough, it's way too soon to know, but for now I'll chalk it up as a positive.

i'm not the one who compared the 6 time super bowl champs to the not a world series title in 70 years indians

Actually, Brady gave the Pats home-town discounts for a long time, and Tribe did offer Lindor a $100m contract.

To be clear, this would have been a record-sized extension for somebody with his service time when it was offered

Why not read scouting reports on these guys, instead?
You make me feel like the old guy with the beer belly who gets carded trying to buy a six pack. Ever heard of usenet? I've discussed statistics\scouting reports dating back to the mid 90s. Dan Szymborski was a regular there as well. Does this satisfy your query?
