Welcome John Johnson III, S

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Hmmmm...I'd have to really think about that, but I think Johnson is a better safety than Golladay is a WR. Totally agreed on Barrett.

But the Browns getting the best secondary player available in the NFL this off season is exciting. If they manage to pair it with a great corner like Shaq Griffin, then the Browns probably managed to address their biggest needs with the best players available to them.
Just to be clear, we aren't counting any of the franchise-tagged players as having been available, right?

Because I'll go to the mat defending Justin Simmons over John Johnson.

I think some people are sleeping on Golladay because he was in Detroit. Dude's a bonified difference maker, legit number 1 receiver in this league. He gives me prime AJ Green vibes, and I loved me some AJ Green.

I mean, I don't disagree with you. I love Johnson. I had him behind Maye and Simmons, but they both got tagged. I have him ahead of Anthony Harris, and think Johnson is going to thrive here. Whether we play three safeties deep, play Johnson up, or play Harrison up, it's going to be fun to give Woods these assets. And hey, if one goes down, we're not starting Andrew fucking Sendejo. That's nice to know.

But Johnson isn't as good of a safety as Golladay is a pass catcher, or Barrett is a pass rusher. Again, all fantasy-land, neither is an option and they don't fill positions of need the way Johnson did, but if nothing mattered, those were my two favorite players on the free agent market.
Right, I see what you're saying, but my entire argument was centered around how bad we needed a safety and how we actually got a really good one on a pretty reasonable contract.

We have good players at those positions already, so if we signed Golladay for example, we'd be adding a stud to an already stacked position in a game with only one football to go around. For me that would barely move the needle and actually make me question the logic behind it, where as signing Johnson has me at full Chubb.

Barrett though would have excited me a lot. Just not as much as Johnson did.

I know there's no real way of knowing/quantifying this, but can anyone think of a time when the Browns (or ANY Cleveland team) got a top free agent in their prime, let alone for "significantly less than other offers"?

Also, I think I'd rather have JJ3 than Watt.

Jack Conklin last year? Was only 25 years old and a former 1st team All-Pro when the Browns signed him.

Kevin Zeitler? JC Tretter? Eric Steinbach?

Agreed, again that comment I made was a throwaway fantasyland comment if nothing else mattered, like money or fit. It probably would've been better off left unsaid.

Although... fuck... putting Golladay at the X, with OBJ at the Z and Landy in the slot? Or even letting OBJ run out of the slot at times? Damn that'd be a splurge of excess but fun to watch.

Yeah, they didn't make it to FA so they do not count to me.

I love Golladay, but I'm not sure he's a top 15 talent at WR. I think Johnson is probably a top 10 safety in the NFL. So while I love Golladay, Johnson is a better safety.

I think he's no doubt a top-15 WR. Here are the people I have ahead of him
  1. Nuk
  2. Davante
  3. Michael Thomas
  4. DK Metcalf
  5. Chris Godwin
  6. Keenan Allen
  7. Tyreek Hill
  8. Stefon Diggs
And here are the only people I feel you could even argue who are ahead of him:
  1. Julio
  2. Allen Robinson
  3. Amari Cooper
  4. Robert Woods
  5. Adam Thielen
  6. Justin Jefferson
  7. Mike Evans
  8. Terry Mclaurin
  9. Courtland Sutton
These guys aren't in any order. The numbers are just to help me count.

Safeties?
  1. Budda Baker
  2. Eddie Jackson
  3. Jamal Adams
  4. Derwin James
  5. Justin Simmons
  6. Marcus Maye
  7. Kareem Jackson
  8. Minkah Fitzpatrick
  9. Jessie Bates
  10. Tyrann Mathieu
Ehhh you're probably close on Johnson being top-10. For some reason I thought there were more safeties I loved in the NFL. There are definitely guys in that list of 10 that I have a hard time arguing are better than Johnson.

Hmmm... let me think...

Harrison Smith no longer exist?

Good call. It was a quick-hitter list. I just looked at the teams and listed some players. You can add a lot of players that I'm sure I missed. Devin McCourty isn't on that list. Both Bills safeties are beloved. Marcus Williams, Adrian Amos...

Golladay is not better than Calvin Ridley btw.

Golladay goes out and Marvin Jones Jr. puts up virtually the same numbers as him the prior season with Stafford. Maybe it was just Stafford making his WR look good.

Agree completely. For example:

2. TIGHT END COVERAGE

The Browns have had their issues with tight ends in recent years, and last season was no different. They gave up 90 catches (ranked fourth) for 907 yards (ranked eighth) and 10 touchdowns (tied for fourth).

Johnson should help with that.

For his career he has been targeted 65 times vs. tight ends, giving up 34 catches (52 percent catch rate) for seven touchdowns with seven interceptions and 16 passes broken up.

In 2018 he led all safeties with 27 targets against tight ends, giving up 15 catches for 164 yards and two touchdowns, but also had four picks, dropped a potential fifth and broke up six passes.

Last season Johnson was targeted 15 times, seventh most among safeties. He allowed just seven catches for 33 yards with one touchdown and one interception. He also broke up five passes.

For comparison, the Browns’ top four safeties last season – Sendejo, Joseph, Harrison and Sheldrick Redwine – gave up 31 catches on 38 targets to tight ends (81.5 percent catch rate), with six touchdowns, two interceptions and five passes defensed
.

Can't think of another position that would have been upgraded that significantly with one move. Not to mention that the guy calls plays as well, and so improves the performances of the people around him.

Except we don't run with 3 WR's very often.
