It could mean that, or it could mean they have very expensive lifestyles that no matter what they invested in they would be spending to their limits. Or it could mean they took those dividends and placed them in other illiquid assets along the way.Not arguing that point of it, but the fact they cried poor means they didn't get much in dividend, but I would rather own a sports team over anything in the world, just saying you don't do it for financial gain. Sometimes you make good money, but in general its a very expensive toy.
Or they could just be assholes and they aren’t nearly as “cash poor” as they cry.
But without actually seeing the books it’s all a guess as to how much they were actually making off the team. But the profit source of that is a component of it. Then if they reinvested any annual profits elsewhere it factors into the equation in the same way compounding interest would. The total return could end up looking a lot better than just the price return
