2014 Free Agency Period: News and Discussion

Re: 2014 Free Agency Period: News and Discussion (Marion watch)

Hopefully land Marion and Allen then just play out the first part of the season and see how things go, don't really want to trade away picks for a center when there might be a cheaper option at the deadline. Already gave up a pick in the Jack deal and another in the Love deal can't just be handing picks out left and right or we'll end up with an old basketball team.

This is an option that i feel is seldom talked about. AV and TT can handle the 5 until the deadline (assuming healthy)

I'm all for that approach. The Cavs can throw a vet minimum to a center in FA and see if he sticks by the time the trade deadline comes around. Potential low risk high reward kind of signing if they have the roster space.

Edit: Besides Bynum, fuck him.

I just want some kind of center assurance in case Andy goes down. Can't put Tristan and Haywood there for 48 minutes.

Kevin Love can play some center as well, and likely will even if Andy is healthy if we bring in Marion.

Rushing to make this a perfect team before even one game is played will just hurt the Cavs long term imo. Of course if you can get a great deal now sure why not but I wouldn't be selling the farm for Mozgov right now.

in a perfect world we get a center early so we can keep Andy's minutes low and make sure he's healthy at the end of the season and in the playoffs (when it counts...)

i expect our roster to look like this: Delly, Harris, Haywood, Kyrie, Lebron, Jones, Miller, Powell, TT, Andy, Waiters, Love, Allen, Marion --> that's 14 roster spots and we still have 3 non-guaranteed contracts from Utah. you can only carry 15 players on the roster (correct me if i'm wrong...) so we would either have to cut two of them before the season (why waste assets like that?) or package them in a trade for a player (Center).

Whose going to be the backup 4? Marion? This needs another big who can eat up some minutes

Re: 2014 Free Agency Period: News and Discussion (Marion watch)

Chris Broussard reported Ray Allen 100% will play next season. Think we can mark this one down. But he did say not 100% for Cleveland. But I for the life of me don't see a world in which he passes up this chance to be part of this magic about to happen

Chris broussard hasn't got a clue. You should only trust one person and that's Wojbomb. The rest are frauds and pretenders.

PF will never be an issue...LeBron and Marion both spent a lot of time there last season, and we can afford to play them there for big minutes if necessary with Miller and Jones available at SF. What we really need is a good durable center.

LeBron won't play extended minutes at the 4 anymore + we need Marion mostly on the perimeter, not the interior. And Jones will barely play any meaningful minutes next season...
But yeah, what we need is a good center, so we don't have to put Thompson at center behind AV.

O'Neal IMO seems most likely FA C.. but if Haywood could return he would work just fine too.. really IMO Mozgov for a late 1st would be a steal.. he is starting to come into his own and is familiar with Blatt.. he finishes strong around the rim..protects the rim and has the ability to get out and finish on the break.. he is a guy that could be big time on this team

Re: 2014 Free Agency Period: News and Discussion (Marion watch)

I think it is very important to find a defensive C.

However, gotta wait a bit before Cavs use their assets. Mozgov for a first pick could be interesting, but I bet Denver will demand more than that.

Guys like Irving, Waiters and Thompson had their development damaged last season. These guys could now, in the right environment, under the right direction, along the right players, simply develop in ways that people wouldn't really expect. Irving and mainly Dion and Thompson can improve a lot defensively. Thompson could actually show that he can handle the C position for some minutes every night.

It would be important to assess the development of these guys before Cavs use assets this season, unless a very good deal comes calling (like a pick for Mozgov or Koufos). I mean, even Haywood could surprise everybody and be an effective 10/15 min guy.

Ray Allen will probably sign. Marion would be a huge addition. If both of these guys are signed, we'd have 14 spots done (considering E'taun Moore, a guy who can defend and shoot the 3 is signed for the minimum):

PG: Irving, Dellavedova, E'taun Moore
SG: Waiters, Allen, Harris
SF: James, Miller, Jones
PF: Love, Marion, Thomoas/Powell
C: Varejao, Thompson, Haywood

If we get a big now, like Mozgov:

SG: Waiters, Allen, James Jones, Harris
SF: James, Marion, Miller
PF: Love, Thompson
C: Varejao, Mozgov, Haywood.

Anyway, this team is looking VERY good. Well balanced, enough depth, many weapons, there is potential for defensive improvement, and we still have assets to play with (Memphis pick, our pick, 3 unguaranteed contracts, Haywood's contract).

I would focus on Marion, get him and Allen, and go with what we got. Nearing the deadline, if there is a glaring hole at C, we have the assets to get one.

Re: 2014 Free Agency Period: News and Discussion (Marion watch)

Well if it comes down to Ray Allen or E'twaun Moore for the minimum, the Cavs can offer less to E'twaun than Ray and get similar production.

What's wrong with playing a 4 on the perimeter? That's obviously going to be a big part of what we do with Love

EDIT: And something else I should note, since people seem to be penciling in TT at backup center. Love played significant minutes at center last year, many many more than Tristan did. What's more, according to 82games he put up a whopping 35.0 PER while playing center. Small ball lineups like Irving-Waiters-James-Marion-Love could be lethal.
