2015 Cleveland Browns Regular Season Thread

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Said a few times and I will say it again... not good enough to make the playoffs, not anywhere near bad enough for a really good draft pick. They're nowhere near as bad as some say. They have plenty of holes, but some good nice pieces.

Big McCown hater, but can't hate on him here. He did get a touch lucky with the INT that was called back for roughing. Pretty dumb fuck throw. Still hate how he holds onto the ball at times. Could've maybe ended it in regulation.
Horse shit we aren't. This defense should be the sole endorser of swiss cheese.

Our receivers are underrated.

Our TE is underrated

Our QB is playing well.

Our pass blocking is decent but our run blocking can improve.

Duke Johnson is a threat that opposing defenses must respect. I think when Turbin comes in the run game will get on track.

That's silly, IMO. This team is as close to 4-1 as they are 1-4. They aren't good, but they are not at the level of some of the dogshit around the league. Could they be a Top 5 pick? Sure, but I just see them willing themselves to too many games. Like it, or not, the offense has been fine. If the defense played like even a shell of itself, they'd be fun to watch.

Another thing to consider in the whole "throwing 50 times a game isn't sustainable" debate is the fact that the Browns are basically calling 10+ smoke/bubble screens a game in places where a team would normally run the ball. The "catch the snap and immediately throw sideways" is essentially a running play.

Credit to DeFilippo on that one, rather than force feeding a running game that just hasn't been that effective, he's found a way to scheme out some easy yards in place of a rushing attack.

One play illustrates how razor thin the margin is...

Imagine if that horrendous pick McCown throws isn't brought back on a roughing the passer penalty?

McCown gets a mulligan, the Browns don't go down 21-3 or 17-3 early in the game (possibly just fold) and then the defense gets a stop after the ensuing punt. Browns then sustain a drive, get a FG and it's a 1 TD game 10 minutes later.

Exactly. I thought the play calling yesterday was phenominal. If, what seems like 80% of your runs under center get stuffed, and you complete 80% of those 1-2 yard routes, doesn't it make considerably more sense to abuse linebackers with Gabriel/Hawkins/Johnson rather than go up the gut with Crowell?

I thought Crowell played great yesterday, too, and that they ran out of the shotgun really, really well.

The Patriots do this a lot

This is the NFL there is a fine line between being great and the worst team in the league. While I am not 100% sold on the FO or the HC I think we have to give it time. If this was year 3, I think we would have a different view, but it is year 2. I think we need to give them another year and hope things start to click. I will agree though that the defense needs some work. We have talent, but it seems like the scheme is off, play calling is off, or the guys just don't fit. But hey the Browns are at least simi enjoyable to watch again!

I used to play linebacker in high school and I know its alot of different in the NFL but I have a few thoughts on the defense.

1. It seems like the Browns are letting teams attack them and are almost "catching blocks" instead of shedding them.
2. We were taught to always take one "false step" forward to see if it was a run before we got back into our drop coverages. This may be different in the NFL with the heavy passing league.
3. I also notice are linebackers take terrible angles to the ball and cannot seem to locate the ball carrier that well. Part of this falls on coaching and not having guys prepared enough to read certain formations and offense tendencies.
4. Lastly,, our defense line needs to shed blocks better. I feel they just accept a stalemate and put all the pressure on the linebackers who are struggling as is.

An adjustment I would make is have Whitner in the box more then he already is and maybe try some more creative run blitzes of the edge..that seems to be where the big runs are going.

.
This is a great point and something that is driving me mad. They are running TO blocks. AKA they are slowing up right before they get blocked. You have to run THROUGH blocks. I noticed this all game yesterday. Something new from Dansby. It looks like they are afraid of contact. Like you said, it is freakin HS level shit.

You watch the Giants game last night? The Giants defense has it's faults, but they showed how you run THROUGH blocks and not to them. Hyde had a few nice runs, but was met in the backfield majority of snaps.

So what you're saying is 11-5 is still doable.

McCown has a passer rating of 102.5

He's higher than Peyton Manning, and Drew Brees.

Fair or unfair, PFF does not put positive grades onto those smoke screens and quick swing passes the Browns use so often.
