Brendan Haywood's Trade Exception

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
It would have to be a pretty good player to move Haywood.

There is big difference between 2 million and 10 million.

Did you not read the above post? The 10 million is going to be worthless to us--so it's ONLY worth $2 million to the Cavs.

The Cavs almost surely won't be able to use Haywood's big contract to trade for a free agent (via a sign-and-trade) but technically they could use Haywood's big contract to trade for already signed players. Whether that strategy is financially viable, or whether they could land anyone useful, is also a question given all the other constraints.

If they can find a team with a useful player (let's say on a rookie contract?) playing for a team who would find it useful to use Haywood's contract to make a big splash next off-season, that may be their best move.

If we trade him, can we go back to calling him Brenda?

No I'm pretty sure Dalembert is available and would be a tremendous pick up. The thing is, GM LeBrizzy is waiting on Heysoos Shuttlesworth.

Dalembert is a stiff!

So could they use Heywood's contract to sign for a good player who is on an awful contract and then somehow pick up a pick along with it?

FYI, Haywood for Norris Cole works financially as a trade. Cole is a free agent at the end of the season, and Miami already has Chalmers and Napier on the roster.

That it is not a home run deal.

My guess is with TT and Shumpert to sign, DG doesn't want add another ~$10mil to his tax bill. While ~$2mil is sensible.

AV's contract def doesn't help.

I'd be amazed to see the Cavs use Haywood's contract next season. Perhaps for a team looking to get out of an extra year on a small contract, but there's almost no way they can add $10 million in salary to next year's team. They've already got about $78 million in salary next year if Smith and Miller opt in, plus, like Lloyd said, you have to pay Thompson and Shumpert. I mean, if they did that the Cavs would be looking at those big, big tax penalties.

I'd be happy if they could use him this year to net a backup PG, and then they'd still have an extra roster spot for a guy like Jermaine O'Neal. That'd give them a super solid roster to really make a deep playoff run this year.

Why is everyone here so concerned about DG's pocket book? Last I checked he was worth 4.3 billion. The only concern is using Haywood's contract appropriately given the CBA and this apron issue.

Because once they're above the apron, there's serious limits on how a team can acquire players. They'll be so far past the apron, they're essentially hard capped and will only be able to trade salary 1 for 1. Since they'll be more than 4M above the tax line, they cannot use a FA exception.

The apron "issue" could become a set of handcuffs over the next couple of years.

In all honesty, if we can re-sign Shumpert, TT, and offer Mozgov an extension this off-season, that would put us in much better financial shape moving forward.

With the expected salary cap jump in 2016, getting those guys signed under the current CBA could potentially save us a ton of money 3-4 years down the road.

In terms of Haywood, I'd be down for trading him for the right guy. His contract is nice, but it might be far more difficult to move than we anticipate. Even if we could use his contract now to get a draft pick, I'd be really happy with that. Other teams will still view his contract as a big asset, but obviously it limits what we can take back in salary if we trade him this season.

Maybe we can convince Boston to give us back Zeller for Haywood straight up...haha. They might entertain the idea. With all the picks they have, the trade exceptions, and the cap space coming off the books, they'd have the potential to land a big time player in a trade with Haywood's deal and still go out and add someone through free agency and a high lotto pick. I'd definitely be interested in Olynyk as well if for some odd reason they made him available.

I wonder too if a guy like John Henson would be available. He's a young guy, good shot blocker, (1.7 blocks in 15 min a game!) good rebounder, and so on. I feel like he'd be a great fit in this rotation and in the system. He could play either PF or C as well.

If this works out boy we would be tough to beat. If can get a solid backup center and a solid backup point guard, this year, we definitely have a real shot to get to the finals if we are injury free.
