Brendan Haywood's Trade Exception

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Re: Brendan Haywood Traded to Cleveland

Teams didn't appear to be willing to deal picks for cash or future picks. There was good talent thru the middle of the 2nd round this year. Don't really like taking on 2 mil for Haywood next season but that was the cost of acquiring another 2nd rounder.

At least he's an expiring contract so they should be able to move him if they absolutely need the capspace this summer.

Re: Brendan Haywood Traded to Cleveland

Haywood missed all season with a stress fracture in his foot. He was just cleared to walk on a court 10 days ago.

Re: Brendan Haywood Traded to Cleveland

So does this mean we aren't taking back Haywood? Or we still are? I hope not.

I find a Gee-Haywood swap kind of weird. We could have just trade future 2nd for this 2nd.

I actually think including Haywood was a big part of this deal. He's on the books for $10 million for the 2015-2016 season that's fully unguaranteed. That contract could be huge for trading purposes.

Re: Brendan Haywood Traded to Cleveland

At first, I didn't understand taking on Haywood's 2 mil for a mid 2nd rounder. That's 2 less mil in cap space for this offseason that we will likely be spending money in.

However, if it is true that he has 10 mil unguaranteed contract for 15/16, that could be a huge trade asset.

If true, props to Gilbert for always ponying up the cash to acquire trade assets. If untrue, David Griffin is a complete idiot for wasting 2 mil on a mid 2nd rounder, especially in this offseason.

Re: Brendan Haywood Traded to Cleveland

That $10M unguaranteed expiring year in 2015-2016 is, well, intriguing. I wonder if they would keep him around to take advantage of that, or perhaps it would be seen as a pretty big asset by teams to which he might be traded.

shamsports also lists the $10M unguaranteed expiring year. I'm guessing it took shape before the current CBA?

So how would that contract work in a trade. Next year would it give us 10 million we can trade and it would be waived right away, like the Bulls did with Bynum? So I'm assuming this helps us next year when Kyrie's max contract kicks in. Not a bad idea.

Re: Brendan Haywood Traded to Cleveland

I like that we are willing to spend money for those kinds of things.

I don't want to see Haywood step on the court, though.

It seems crazy to me to take that on if he isn't planned to be flipped immediately. We didn't take that on just to take Powell. I don't think we wanted Powell THAT bad. Its like we wanted this contract more. I hope its part of a bigger trade anyway.

Re: Brendan Haywood Traded to Cleveland

Could be used for a run at Melo. The Knicks would be able to use that contract to clear cap space next summer. Or any centers entering free agency next year?

Re: Brendan Haywood Traded to Cleveland

Lol stahp with the Melo stuff. Lala wouldnt let him play in Cleveland.

I don't see it that way. The only benefit I see here is if the Cavs hold onto Haywood until next offseason and then find a team that wants to unload a good player to save/create cap space.

Say the Cavs end up signing some players longterm this offseason and then are strapped going into next offseason not being able to sign anyone because they are over the cap.... The Cavs could theoretically still add a good player through trade without giving much up because of this contract. Haywood would help match the salary of the other player and then the other team could cut him and save 10 mil.

How the hell was this contract created anyways? I don't recall ever seeing something like this where the salary in the last year jumps times 5 and is not guaranteed.

Re: Brendan Haywood Traded to Cleveland

We eat $2 million in salary this year, but Hayward's contract can be traded for someone making $10 million next year, or some type of combination of players that come out to $10 million. So if we were to get a meeting with LeBron this summer, we can point to this contract as a way to bring in someone making $10 million NEXT year when we are over the cap and can only afford the MLE. So in order to round out a roster in 2015, Cleveland could use this massive $10 million contract that can be immediately waived.

I think it has something to do with the fact that he was amnestied. But, it is really odd.

This was an amnestied contract from Dallas. Charlotte won the bidding with a $2.06M bid. Hence the 3 guaranteed years of the deal Charlotte (now Cleveland) pays Haywood $2M. The last year is unguaranteed so I guess the amnesty bid doesn't apply. Cuban is picking up the rest of the tab.

The $10M unguaranteed year isn't until 2015-2016. According to the sources cited above, he only counts as $2M toward any trade in 2014-2015. So his contract wouldn't have that special trade value go into effect until a year from now for some team that's willing to carry him as the 15th man for 2014-2015.
