Re: Browns hire Jim O'Neil as DC.. OC still TBA
I'm really interested to see how this OC hire turns out..
Considering the names thrown around, I really think it just goes to show how few good offensive names and offensive play callers are available... I'd like to see them possibly expand this beyond just Shanahan and DeFilippo...
I actually really like Mike Bloomgren of Stanford; I'd even extend out to see if maybe Chad Morris or Phillip Montgomery might make the jump... Otherwise, I'd look at other pro guys like Geep Chryst, Randy Ficthner and Ken Zampese...
The intriguing thing that I noticed is a lot of the names thrown around (Shanahan, Van Pelt, DeFilippo) are younger coordinators in their 30s with little experience in the NFL... Yes Kubiak and Callahan were names of interest too but it seems like Pettine is interested in perhaps going with some newer, fresher names on the offensive side of the ball...
I also particularly enjoy Pettine extending his search outside of the normal linked names that he's worked with...
I respect Shanahan as an offensive mind but really worry about the problems within locker room and coaching staff that he reportedly caused in Washington... Now that was a toxic environment and perhaps the best thing for him will be to get away from his father and Kubiak but it is a little concerning...
I'm actually quite excited about the defensive staff... I really think Weaver will be an underrated addition... I'm always a proponent of getting a former player on the staff like Weaver to help be a bridge between the coaches and players in relating to them, especially with a new coach trying to get players to buy into him... Someone like Weaver plays a big role in that..
I'm not too concerned about the lack of experience on the defensive side of the ball, honestly... For a guy like Pettine, I think Rex Ryan is a good example of his coaching staff working out well because they're all guys with a similar vision, cut from the same cloth, all having went through similar experiences together.. I really think it breeds cohesiveness and these guys will form a pretty good defensive crew...
