Re: Windy: Offer to Shaw or Scott could come soon

Was there anything ever released about what Jason Kidd and CP3 had to say to our organization about Byron as a coach?

Jason Kidd:

When he was dismissed by the Nets in 2004 after two consecutive trips to the NBA Finals, Scott's coaching reputation was on the ropes. Jason Kidd - who screamed at Scott in an infamous December 2003 locker-room tirade - and his teammates tuned out Scott and ran him out of town, tarnishing his achievement of back-to-back conference titles.

Chris Paul:

Chris Paul taken aback by New Orleans Hornets' firing of Byron Scott

New Orleans Hornets point guard Chris Paul credits Byron Scott for helping him develop into a two-time All-Star and Olympic champion.
As New Orleans Hornets players gathered at the Alario Center on Thursday morning, team president Hugh Weber met with captains Chris Paul and David West to inform them that Coach Byron Scott was fired and his replacement would be General Manager Jeff Bower.
Paul wasn’t happy with the decision, and he certainly wasn’t pleased with being caught off guard by the announcement. He said the Hornets should have sought his and West’s input before the decision was finalized.

"I felt like, maybe somebody would have at least consulted with me and asked how I felt before it happened," Paul said by telephone Thursday night. "It’s not to get my approval, but we feel we should know about the decision before it takes place."

The Hornets have struggled this season, getting off to a 3-6 start. Weber said the organization didn’t see enough improvement, which necessitated the move.

"You can’t put all this on Coach," Paul said.

Scott is the only coach that Paul has played for since coming to the Hornets as a first-round draft pick in 2005. They became golf partners this summer and Paul largely credits Scott for helping him develop into becoming a two-time All-Star point guard and Olympic gold medal winner.

Though Scott was a demanding coach, Paul said their relationship transcended beyond the court.

"Coach had an open line of communication," Paul said. "Guys would feel a certain way about playing time, and Coach was always honest with you. He was always straight-forward with you from Day One."

Paul, however, said he has no problem playing for Bower or trying to excel in a different system than Scott’s Princeton offense. Bower said he may not stick with one primary offensive set, but could use a variety of schemes to get the best use of his talent. Paul is effective with pushing the tempo.

"I think we all need to have an open mind, the system could change, but we still have to play the game," Paul said. "Regardless of what is going on, the game is still basketball. I’m going to play as hard as I can every night.

"I know D-West is going to do the same. I know the team is going to do the same."

Re: Windy: Offer to Shaw or Scott could come soon

Phil Jackson has had the excellent fortune of having some of the greatest basketball players in NBA history on his roster in both Chicago and LA. Dont get me wrong, I think he is a great coach but I would not put him as the best in history based on his ring count as I think Kobe. Shaq, Pippen, Jordan, etc had a lot to do with his success.

I agree, there's no question he's a great coach, but greatest ever? Come on people!

How many coaches have had the chance to coach THAT kind of talent? Less than a handful.

I'm not sold he's the best head coach in the NBA currently, let alone all time.

Re: Windy: Offer to Shaw or Scott could come soon

From what I've been told, Lebron believes that as well.

quite frankly, anyone with a brain should now that. it was as obvious as the nose on one's face! esp. the shaq and andy injuries. your too best bigs. end of story.

Re: Windy: Offer to Shaw or Scott could come soon

I'd rather have a system I know will, at least eventually, work rather than whatever the hell Scott brings to the table.

I am not trying to start an "e" fight or what ever, but the truth is the best coach available was already fired by the Cavs this year.

With that said Scott and Jordon put in the Princeton Offense at Washington. The Princeton offense can be argued as a better system for a variety of ways.

Read the artivle above for a recent explanation

I am not argueing for either one at this point, nor do I want Brown back, I think Brown should have been let go last year but hell thati s a different topic.

Shaw may or may not be able to introduce the triangle successfully, but no one other than Phil as been able to.

Edit

I will say I would rather see Mo, Lebron, Jamison in the Princeton versus the Triangle.

As opposed to Byron Scott and unproven coordinator? Yes.

It was a bad year to hire a new coach, but on the other hand, it had to be done. Players totally tuned him out.

that does remind me of my worst fear with shaw and that is, like brown, he's never been a head coach at all. i think brown's greatest struggles were with HC-type decisions like rotations, match-ups, thinking on his feet, etc. i think these are things you can only learn by being a HC. hope i'm wrong, though...

Unfortunately, Byron Scott is actually WORSE than Mike Brown at in game adjustments.

Re: Windy: Offer to Shaw or Scott could come soon

I think Shaw would be the better option and I would like to see Lebron and Bosh in the triangle offense

If that is your worst fear, then you got it good!

Gilbert right now is loosing sleep on not only losing LeBron but 100 million if he signs else where. Then Cavs go from Playoff-contenders to border line lottery team.

Re: Windy: Offer to Shaw or Scott could come soon

Count me in the Shaw camp. Going into this thing, I wanted either a stud head coach or a young assistant who could become one. The reason is obvious. If you look at a list of coaches who have won the NBA championship over the past couple of decades, you're almost exclusively looking at Hall of Fame/Hall of Fame caliber coaches. Rarely do you see these mediocre re-treads go out there and do what at this point in our franchise is a requisite - win the big one.

I like Bryon Scott well enough, don't get me wrong, but when you're fired from 2 jobs with so-so results and have reported issues dealing with personnel, I just don't think that's the coach I'd settle on unless I had to. We need to try to hit a home run here and there's a legitimate chance that Scott is just another version of Mike Brown. With Shaw, yes he's unproven and there would be a learning curve, but he has the NBA pedigree (with rings as both a player and coach) that LeBron respects and has learned a great system under the best coach in the business for over half a decade.

Sure, there's a chance Shaw busts and we're stuck but there's also a chance (and a good one) that he has learned well from Phil and becomes a great coach. At this point with all the proven great names off the table, I'd rather make a boom or bust pick like Shaw than a pick like Scott where there's a legitimate chance the results are mediocre again.

Any coach with tons of titles will have great players. I don't buy that argument against Phil. Red Auerbach had a ton of HOFers, so did Riley.

And to make a point for Phil...only Shaq of his core players have a ring without him. And Shaq got that ring with another one of the alltime great coaches. That should say a lot right there.

i find that very hard to believe...granted i have had the chance to watch scott a lot more than scott. actually, how much have you seen scott in action? can any of us really comment on something like scott's in game adjustments with any authority? just sayin'...
