The Brian Hoyer thread...

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Ya. For some reason, I wasn't seeing the accuracy statement..

What is odd, though, is that guys who have higher completion % also have a high "yards per pass attempt". It's not that way for Hoyer, who is 10th in the category, but yields a paltry 55% completion percentage. I would think that longer throwing QBs have more incompletions, but that doesn't seem to hold up.

Play action over the top has been a key in this discrepancy.

It was a bad performance all around by the offense. Running backs stopped beating one on one situations against defenders. Hoyer had 2-3 batted balls and missed on 3-4 other throws, receivers were generally terrible. I am currently frightened by what the loss of Alex Mack is going to mean for this team. Don't get me started on special teams, which have been consistently bad in wins AND losses all year. Plenty of blame to go around. I just don't like the scapegoating of one guy.

The only guy who deserves to get off the hook is Gipson, who was spectacular all day. Everyone else looked equally rattled.

Hawkins had his first 100 yard game of his career, so I wouldn't really put that much blame on him.

He made one big play by getting past his defender and made a really nice play getting two feet down falling out of bounds. One play where he got past his corner with the ball wasn't quite enough to impact the game greatly, but he was exactly one ball carrier who was able to do that all game. The game plan was to pop some big plays, and they didn't materialize.

I thought aside from those two plays, Hawkins struggled. He did drop balls, bobbled catchable balls which prevented him from getting YAC opportunities, and overall didn't produce like a top wide receiver. Of course, he is best suited to be a slot receiver not a top passing option... and that is where I have said in good times and bad that the team needs an upgrade at WR.

After week 11 we make our upgrade at wr. Hawkins shouldn't be the number one option on this team anyways.

I'm not sure you can expect much out of Gordon when he comes back for a few games if not the rest of the season.

True. Since that joint may have caused him to forget how to play football or something.

Yeah I mean, they have preseason camps and games just for fun. A week of practice should get his timing and conditioning down.

Well hopefully (and I don't know why they wouldn't have) they gave him a good plan to follow to get him game ready as much as possible. It may take him a week or so to get back full, but that still puts the opposite teams best CB on Gordon, which pushes Hawkins where he needs to be.

Just having him on the field will be a +

I think it's reasonable to expect some rust from Gordon when he returns. It's more likely that he'll come out and have a sub-par game rather than the all pro games he had last year.

I kind of disagree with this logic.

I could understand it if he were sitting on the couch eating Doritos, coming off of major injury, etc. But he's been allowed to work with the training staff, hit the weight room, stay in shape, and learn the playbook on his own accord.

I think most of his shortcomings will be attributed to the playbook and chemistry, but physically I don't expect a major dropoff.

I was also at the game Sunday; admittedly, drunk as fuck.

I saw Hoyer throw about four quality passes. It also seems as if there is at least one play per game, where a WR is running wide open and BH6 underthrows him. It doesn't elicit a "WTF" vibe from me, like it would during the Weeden era, but it does seem to establish the limits on his deep ball. That said, that rope to Cameron in the PIT game was a fucking great throw.

The WRs, who had the least amount of dropped passes coming in to the Jags' game, did some quality Greg Little impersonating on a few would-be conversions. Given the lack of 'marquis' type WR talents we acquired in the off-season, I'm sure we were all expecting a dud performance like this. That said, Hawkins and Gabriel are practically unable to be covered with the current NFL rules; apparently Pettine/Farmer/Shanahan/somebody found something and went with it. Can't wait to see Gordon in the mix.

The Jags have that SEA/Gus Bradley four-man defensive front, which can generate pressure with only four guys. Our RG had a terrible game, and I can't help but think putting Greco back at RG with an actual NFL center might be the better way to go. Greco at C and McQ at RG hurts our OL at two positions; however, 4/5 of our starting OL intact plus a backup C might be a better approach. I've watched every JAX game so far, and they were much better than their 0-fer record coming in to Sunday's game. Also, look for the Bucs' DL to give us some issues in a couple weeks; they have some legit talent on the DL and don't need extra blitzers to generate a pass rush.

Typing all that about the Jags' DL just makes me even more pissed about our own DL, who are currently 32nd in run defense. Fucking A, that pisses me off. Aside from Desmond Bryant, the other DL starters (Taylor and Rubin-I know they didnt play this past week) can pound sand. With our seive-like DL, and with Sheard expecting a contract similar to Kruger's, I would not be surprised if we went DL and pass rusher with our first round picks next year.

Gipson had a nice game, and the few times I focused on Justin Gilbert he looked much better than week one. I was hoping to see the recording of the game yesterday, but the Orlando CBS affiliate showed the Miami game. Fags.

Even with the Jags' beatdown, we are sitting at 3-3. In my pre-season forecast, I had us at 3-3 at this point, as well; however, I had us beating JAX and losing to NO. Nothing would make me happier than two straight wins going into Cincy for the Thursday Night Game....

I completely expect a thrashing of the Raiders on Sunday.

But he's not allowed to practice with the team. He won't be in game shape and I think he'll have a high level of rust early.

Hopefully they have him training in "game form" as much as they can without him practicing with the guys. I know sprinting, stopping, setting, etc..with pro athletes not covering you is different than even practice, let alone game, but I am sure they are doing everything possible.

The biggest thing will be the playbook and timing with Hoyer. Look how many balls were thrown by Hoyer where he said, "We were on a separate page, different timing..."

The one plus we can think is that ATL will put their best corner on him, so he can take a game to get back into things. And I believe ATL D is the worst running D in the league, so throw Tate/Crowell at them a lot and get Gordon a few looks to get timing down.

Last year, Gordon and Hoyer had tremendous chemistry. If Gordon has been active with the JUG machine in this suspension, I think he can jump right in. If he treated this time away from practice the same way he treated the summer...
