Trade Deadline Day - 2020

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
I am pretty sure that would be one boring video, my parents divorced in the late 70's. married late 60's, they are not what you would call an exciting couple. But if you are into that weird 60's porn that really doesn't exist, by my guest to dig up the footage.

You know the camera industry made majority of their advancements because of those early desires for those types of vids right? Lol

I didn't before, but I do now, lol

They even did a movie about one of the main peeps as well if i remember correctly. Check your history of porn and film. Your parents may have been apart of the trial run of the 60s advancement haha

Okay, so we gotta get back to baseball. I know you arent an expert, but what do you think of the move?

Clevinger was gone in the offseason if not now, we had 6 maybe 7 starters maybe more if Logan is ready, so it was a position of stgrength.

Getting 5 players who at one time were top 100 prospects seems like a huge haul for a big arm that will be gone in 1.5 years and has had injury problems in the past.

I am more excited for Naylor than most, love the fact his little brother is the catcher of our future most likely, but like the fact he is another big bat, kind of like a Reyes light...but should be a solid hitter in the 6 or 7 hole. I think many are sleeping on our outfield now. Deshields is very average, but is decent defensively, has speed to burn and has had some timely hits and batting .277 this year although a career .250 hitter, in the 9 hole he is a bit protected and is fitting nicely. Naquin has been good, very good, mid 800 OPS, batting around .300, lots of 2 out hits...and he is a career .800 OPS guy, now that he is healthy we need to hope he stays that way.

We have been hoping for some pop in the outfield, and with our short right field porch, I think Naylor is set to be that guy, basically the guy we were hoping the now DFA'd Santana could become. Naylor isn't Trout or anything, but he should be a bit above average bat that can hit for some power. Moving forward we still have the top rotation, one of the top bullpens, and now our outfield isn't a complete joke. With a good infield, that could be all we need to make the WS and get swept by the Dodgers, lol. (they look tough, but baseball is weird, you never know)

If you recall.. back when Lindor was first drafted... it was thought he would certainly have the glove, range and arm to play SS at the highest level of Baseball.. The question was whether he would be able to hit & hit with some power.. At under 6 foot and barely over 170 pounds.. he was a slap hitting SS with a slick glove.. We found out that Lindor can hit.. hit for both average and power..

Fast forward to the today.. Gabriel Arias was drafted as a 17 year old.. just at 6 foot or a wee bit above that and maybe 170 pounds.. today.. he is bigger, stronger and faster than Lindor (6'1" and over 200 pounds). Arias is big enough and has put on enough muscle that he may be considered for 3B.. Additionally, what Arias does bring is a pedigree that says this is the slickest fielding prospect in MiLB.. He was so well thought of.. he was moved to full season ball and reached A+ in his age 19 year.. Says this could become a special kind of player.. just like the guy currently playing the spot..

Thoughts..?

My thoughts are exactly what you posted. :biggrinthumb:

SportIng News calls Tribe deadline loser but their assessment seems reasonable.

Why they’re here: They’re tied for first place in the AL Central, and they traded a starter with a career ERA of 3.20 (ninth in baseball since 2016, among pitchers with at least 80 starts) without getting back a ton of big-league help for 2020. Long-term, maybe this turns into a gem of a deal. Cleveland’s chances of winning it all in 2020, though, are not better today than they were yesterday.

Yep, and they're replacing him with a SP carrying a 1.29 ERA this season and a career 3.42 ERA. They added a LFer that can hit and will likely far surpass anything given to us from our OF other than Naquin. The dude can hit and he's young.

They also replaced Leone with Quantrill. That is significant in and of itself.

Hedges paired with Perez is the best defensive catching tandem in the league bar none.

They have likely traded for Lindor's replacement. Very similar in many ways.

We now have a legitimate LHP prospect that will likely crack top 100 lists soon.

Bottom line, if they didn't have Plesac and/or McKenzie didn't show himself to be ready then I doubt they would have dealt Clev at this time. They made this team better now and for the next several years. It was a good trade. I'm only disappointed in the trade they didn't make.

What I like about the trade:

- Joey Cantillo
- Gabriel Arias

What I don't like:

- The rest are mostly JAGs
- Starters with Clevinger's resume don't usually come cheap, yet the Padres managed to hold on to their top 6 prospects
- Star trades typically bring back at least 3 quality prospects; 2 is on the low end and neither is a top prospect
- The Indians still had control over Clevinger for 2+ years -- a bargain for a dominant starter
- The Indians are currently in the mix for the World Series; their odds of getting there just dropped

Edit: Added the word "mostly" for good measure.

Fun fact:

In 2019, Clevinger's WAR (4.1) was tied with the Padres #1 WAR ranked player (Fernando Tatis Jr.).

Do we for sure know that Naylor is just a Jag? Last year he was still a top prospect of a loaded Padres system and has only played 112 games in his career.

There was a time before streaming that whatever the porn industry went with, it won the war. Beta vs VHS, DVD vs DVDA(I think that is what it was) and blu-ray vs DVD-HD.

I just knew I should've written that sentence as "The rest are mostly JAGs." I decided to let it go and now here I am having to defend my poor wording. :chuckle:

You're correct to question my statement. Neither Naylor or Miller are JAGs. The combination of Naylor and Miller appear to represent that 3rd top prospect so to speak. Value-wise, as I understand it, the league knew the Indians were trying to move Clev and that they're losing money due to the pandemic, so the Indians inability to pry away any of the Padres top 6 isn't a total shock. It's just disappointing since the Padres just traded for a player as productive as any on their roster while not having to give up any of their top prospects. We're talking about unproven prospects for a proven star -- most of whom will probably never reach Clev's level.

I think it's weird that people continue to use generic, public scouting rankings to evaluate the trade.

Was Bieber a top prospect? Was Clevinger? Was Plesac? Civale? Jose? I think our organization's evaluations often don't match those public lists.

I prefer we go off our own internal evaluations.

Oh, and if you still want to wrap yourself in warm snugglies about those lists, then a lot of the guys we traded for had hit a top-100 prospect list at some point in the past.

It's a win-now and win-later special for the Tribe. They traded a top end starter, and those are supposed to be valuable. I get it. Fans wanted more.

But I don't think the Indians are going to miss Clev that much. They still have a #1 starter with two playoff worthy starters in Civale and Carrasco behind him. If McKenzie and Plesac are for real, they still have a plus group of starters.

The three young vets they receive in return help the three biggest holes on the roster right now with good players. Naylor is in the discussion for the second or third best outfielder on the team right now. Hedges is now the best catcher, Quantrill is a legit reliever arm. So, they are a more balanced team for this postseason.

If the minor league assets pan out, it's a hell of a trade for the future as well.

To answer your question, people use prospect rankings because they're available. Internal evaluations are not. It's really that simple. The Covid-19 incident, the team's dire financial situation, the leverage the Indians had or didn't have, all may or may not have been a factor. Nobody here knows exactly what "internal evaluations" the Indians made, so it's a moot point. Most fans don't grade trades based on internal evaluations. Feigning shock when they don't is what's really weird, imo.

@CavsFTW

No we didn't get a top 5 prospect per say, but Naylor and Quantrill just graduated from being prospects and have big league experience.

Quantril is a guy I know Cleveland wanted to draft if they had the chance too. He fits the mold perfectly for what the brass likes to have in the organization. He also a starter but was switched to the bullpen for this season.

If we did this trade last season, all 5 guys would have been in our top 20 prospects so not sure why that is an issue?

Small market teams survive and compete when they are able to develop non top prospects into legit big leaguers. I know we didn't get the top guy, but i have a good hunch, the three prospects we got will play in the pros.

Our catching depth isn't great, but now we have a gold glove winner and his backup got votes for a gold glove as well when he started. Indians organization values that first over hitting from the position.
