2021 NBA Draft Safari

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Edit: top 9
Interesting considering where the Cavs could potentially be drafting. If they do end up drafting 8th-9th I'd certainly take a flier on Giddey over Franz Wagner but maybe I'm a little jaded after watching Wagner's older brother in the NBA. Wagner also disappeared too many times for my liking. I really like Giddey's creativity, size and playmaking potential esp now that he's also showing an improved shot. Guys that are 6'-8" with his ballhandling/playmaking skill are rare. He's been very impressive in a pro league at just 18..he's actually a few months younger than what Lamelo was during the ABL season last year. I'm going to assume Delly has firsthand intel on the kid too. My main concerns would be lack of explosiveness and physicality to defend his position...
Kinda crazy how these internationals are suddenly starting to raise their draft stock. Sengun, Giddey, Garuba, and Roku all seem to be rising up draft boards.

With Giddey what is interesting is if you look at similar players drafted last year (Melo and Poku at OKC) you see his value as a large playmaker. In a modern offense with multiple ball handlers you can get real value from heady wings who can initiate out of the PnR. This makes his floor quite high even with his limited athleticism. I think his shooting will be there by year 2. His form is decent and he will get stronger. Theres a lot to like about Giddey if cavs land out of the top 5.

What makes Giddey a better prospect than Barnes? I’m just curious on opinions. They both seem like big guys who can run the point, with more limited scoring potential.

In that instance, wouldn’t you want the guy who is potentially a great defender? And is more interchangeable? Or do people believe in Giddey being more active as a scorer?

With my limited experience Giddey seems like he has more offensive potential. The worry with Barnes is will he ever be great at one thing. Having said that I love Barnes and had until now assumed he was already off the board before Giddey

I'd basically second what Adam said. If I was making the case for Giddey (really I like them about equally), I'd say:

-You can expect Giddey to come in and immediately average 6+ assists per game in a lead ballhandler role like Melo, and in the long run he could be a perennial top-5 assist guy in the NBA. Barnes is going to need some development there, and he may peak as a good rather than great passer.

-Giddey's a much safer bet to shoot from 3. He's already making multiple 3's per game on a semi-regular basis, and his 3-point shooting trended up over the season while Barnes trended down.

-Giddey is more than a full year younger than Barnes. Given another year to develop, Giddey's offensive skills will be even further ahead, and he'll be able to bulk up his frame to a respectable weight for a wing.

As a team with 2 waterbug score first guards I believe a creative pass first big wing/playmaker like Giddey could solve alot of problems for the Cavs. I saw that he recently measured out at 6'-9" in shoes. The Hornets were way more efficient too when they moved Rozier off the ball this season before the Lamelo injury.

Moses Moody defensive skills are superior to Giddey's which gives Him the edge if cavz have choice between the two.

I like Moody too, but it's really tough to compare him to Giddey. They're very different in so many ways.

Do we really want to even consider bringing in another lottery pick whose best attribute is defense and will have to develop (if ever) an offensive game? Barnes scares me.

Moody has nice potential but he's a 6'-6" guard that hasn't shown much playmaking skill. He's obviously very young (still only 18 himself). The Cavs have boxed themselves in a bit at this point with their last 3 lottery picks. They could really use a guy with more length that is also a proficient playmaker given their current roster. Obviously take BPA esp when there is a tier difference in prospects but if we are talking about equivalent talent in the 7-10 range of this draft than they might need to go with fit.

Yeah I'm with you even though I also do like Barnes quite a bit. Add into it that Barnes will be almost 20 when the draft rolls around which only makes him about 6 months younger than Okoro...and like Okoro also needs to develop an offensive game.
At this point they should probably take Mobley if they luck out with the lottery balls. Otherwise I'm hard leaning Giddey if they end up in the more likely 7-9 range.

Barnes reminds me of Giannis as a rookie

I agree, just a notch below

Totally up to the situation he is drafted in/under. You put the ball in his hands and have him initiate like Kidd did with Giannis early, and I'll bet his offense comes along quicker. His plus athleticism, decision making and feel for creating for others has him much higher for me because of what's possible.

Giannis also grew 2-3 inches during his rookie season, which I don't anticipate from Barnes :chuckle:

Still, the way they move, and even the way they shoot (and miss) looks so similar to me.

I'm blown away that they are being compared right now.

Don't see it with Giddey to warrant his rise. Has a 6'8 "Rubio passing/Greivis Vazquez athleticism, shooting, floor general" feel for me. An international Cade Cunningham with a less reliable jumper and even less athleticism and burst.

I wouldn't rank him above Barnes or Moody.

From a business standpoint, I can see the appeal and optimism that he can replicate Luka Magic if you clear the deck for him and make the offense run through him but raw talent, I have him just after the lottery for my own prep-to-pros evaluation.
