If Nolan Jones is your number five prospect then you have problems. He has been horrible all year

Disagree with this shallow response..

Hitting .228, no power , 102 k”s in 275 Abs . Below average defensively. Doesnt excel anywhere in the field. How this warrants as a number 5 prospect in your system is beyond me

"No power" as he is in the top 50 for AAA East qualified hitters in slugging, is putting up a .200 ISO (which is great), and leads the AAA East in 2Bs (is 3rd among all AAA players in 2B). And he is doing that while 4 years younger than the average player age at his level.

He is not "below average defensively". A lot of you need to get away from associating minor league errors means someone isn't good defensively.

And again, you can't just erase an entire month, but context, context, context. After missing an entire season due to Covid he struggled out of the gate, like a lot of players did. Since May he is slashing .243/.350/.470 with a K rate 26.5%. That .820 OPS and 26.5% K rate are right in line with his minor league career averages, the same averages that made him a top prospect in the first place.

I am actually more bullish on Jones following this season because this is the first time he has struggled for any significant length of time at any level as a pro and he has now proven he can struggle and still produce at an above league average level offensively. Guys K'ing 102 times in 276 ABs should not be getting on base at a .350 clip with an OPS around .800.

That is special and that's what separates him from someone like Owen Miller, who predominantly gets on base in the minors by getting singles and taking advantage of lesser defensive players and positioning, but sees those same balls put in play turn to outs at the MLB level when faced with superior defensive talent and positioning/game planning.

I was going to type a post, but you saved me the time (and I’m sorry we have to rehash this… again).

Nolan Jones being our fifth would basically make us the best farm team in baseball by quite a long ways.

Nolan Jones leads the International League in doubles (22.) He had a very slow start for the month of May, which shouldn't be shocking considering he hadn't played competitive baseball since 2019 at Double-A. Since June, he has sported an .812 OPS with 9 home runs. He also has a .780 OPS against LHP this season in 72 plate appearances.

Jones shouldn't stray outside of their top 3.

Some short attention spans by fans doesn't mirror how Jones is viewed by the industry. He is thought very highly of league-wide.

Bimbo, am I crazy to think that maybe the plan is for Zimmer to be the Opening Day RF in 2022 if he can continue to produce at the plate for the rest of this season? Nolan Jones can then start the season in Columbus again and then be recalled if Zimmer falters or there's an injury in the outfield. This would assume that Naylor stays healthy and is either the LF or 1B depending on where the team upgrades in the offseason.

Also, any updates on the minority owner search? Gracias

Not crazy. Said it somewhere earlier this year, you can dig it up somewhere, but they were prepping Zimmer to become at worst their 4th OF next year, which I think turns him into a very valuable piece.

But same kind of messaging with Jones, context. People wanted to give up on him after ~150 MLB at-bats splattered across 3 seasons with various health issues after the guy had to change his entire swing mechanics down to how he held the bat after breaking his hand. He lost a lot of flexibility with it and couldn't even hold the bat like he used to. That itself is usually a death knell for a guys career.

Talent has never been the question with Zimmer. Always health. If he is able to stay healthy the rest of 2021 and have a healthy off season it'll be interesting to see how he looks.

And I can't talk about that last question.

You can't discount cold streaks and you can't discount hot streaks. Like Thome always said, get back to me at the end of the season. Everything counts, and then you look at trend lines year to year and level to level.

The Indians farm system is easily top third in MiLB.. perhaps above top 5... imho...

Hmmm.. Jones straying outside of the top three is more a statement that Valera and Espino and Martinez are improving or have a more defined upward trajectory than a slight against Jones.. I think you can agree with that...
