2022 Season| Series #41 | Orioles @ Guardians | Aug. 30 - Sep. 1, 2022

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Wasn't it last year that the Gs lead the league in being shut out?

First of all, I didn't say the Guardians couldn't compete against playoff caliber teams. Now I know you have a bit of a history of being... let's call it particular... in the way you like to frame what people said as opposed to what they actually said, but let's not misquote anybody here.

You know what happens when a team reaches the playoffs? They don't face the opposing team's 4th and 5th starters anymore. They don't face their bench guys. The other team's best players don't get days off for rest. They don't face the 7th and 8th pitchers in the bullpen.

You get the very best of the best the other team has to offer every single game. It isn't like that in the regular season. I would be very weary of extrapolating regular season results as any sort of indicator of what will happen in the playoffs.

But if we want to get into some factual info... the Guardians don't hit a lot of home runs. If they make the playoffs they're going to be last in the AL playoff field by a mile in home runs hit. The Guardians also don't draw many walks. If they make the playoffs, they're going to be last in the AL playoff field in walks as well.

So more than any other team in the AL playoff field, they're more reliant on stringing together multiple hits in an inning in order to have a big inning.

Personally? I am of the opinion that when they're facing the other team's best starting pitchers and best relief pitchers every single game, this is going to prove to be more difficult to do.

It's obviously not impossible to do, but in my opinion it's far more challenging for a team to string together 4 or 5 hits off a guy like Alek Manoah or Shane McClanahan or Justin Verlander in one inning to score multiple runs than it is for one player to hit a home run off those guys.
Excellent post.

Except that they struggle to string together multiple hits against rookies and journeymen.

You play 3 guys a night every night that can’t hit for shit. It only takes a couple of guys slumping at the same time in the rest of the order and you are almost assuredly getting beat. That’s 3 shut outs in 4 games.

Doesn’t seem to be a ton of difference between us and the other lower level playoff contenders except that they can put runs on the board with one swing and for the most part, we do not. I believe we were out-homered 5 to 1 in each of the last 2 series.

So we lost the game, the Twins didn't play today and the Sox only won by 6 runs.. So it's looks like we lost or something...

But....

We're playing at home against out of division rivals, so it doesn't.. wait. it does... wait.. wait..

All kidding aside, it is time for Naylor, Amed and even Kwan to step up/take that next step for the team. OGonz, you better listen up too, even though I'm giving you a bit of a pass here.

Anything at the plate from our catchers, Straw, Miller, Palacios, Freeman, Benson.....Clement... Is a bonus..

JRam - may have to throw the team on his back again
Amed - hope he's done cooling off
Kwan - a little more aggression earlier in the count
Gimenez - I know you got this handled :)
Naylor - a bit more focus at the plate and a little less celebration prep... kidding.. but you might be the key here bub
Ogonz - just don't strike out... You were really patient on your initial callup, and it worked.

Everyone else - No errors, bonehead plays and flubbed sacrifices.
