2009-2010 Season: Mike Brown's Player Rotation Chart:

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
If it turns out to be a lot of trouble, I expect Mike Brown to fix that.

Remember, he originally tried a 10 man rotation in the Celtics opener last year, with the 5 bench guys getting the feed in critical stretches. Then he immediately put Mo out there in the second game that corrected almost 50% of the problem at the time, the lack of an offensive threat when LeBron's not playing. Later on, Mo wasn't enough with the 4 bench guys, so he put Z out there from the starting lineup to give more offense. Finally, in the end game, he decided to go with the starting guards in the 2nd quarter to give movement and flow to the game, and took Z out of the mix.

He's not a good in-game analyzer, so he can't make adjustments on the fly. I bet the reason is because of his persona, he just isn't mentally capable of what Phil Jackson does instinctively. And many coaches can probably be considered in the same category as Brown, considering the pace of a game at the professional level.

Instead, Mike will research the problems beforehand and come up with solutions at the next convenience, whether it's at the half, and the end of a game, or the middle of a long break, or even in the 10-12 hour stretch he has until the next game. He does very well with going over situations with his coaches.

He has limitations that we should realize we can't ask of Mike Brown to be who he isn't. I've figured that out after long enough. And besides, he's won a Conference Title and 66 Regular Season Games using that capacity he's capable of, so why are we complaining?

Just wait for the end result. If it's not enough, we have to accept the situation. But until LeBron loses faith in him, we shouldn't either.

This post is a result of trying to explain why he just can't adjust minute by minute like the REALLY talented coaches. No choice but to show faith until he can successfully coach us to a title.

Rotations should be managed based on the flow of the game, not by some prearranged system that doesn't take into account what is needed in specific situations.

Whatever Brown decides on, you can bank on the group starting the 2nd quarter as being the unit with the least possible chance of offensive success. Resting Lebron for a mere 3 minutes of the game and having Shaq join him for that time is laughable. You don't trade for a guy that generally demands double teams so you can bench him along side your only other major offensive threat.

That's why this brings back memories of last year's game #1. At the end of the day, you tell yourself, "man, this game feels so winnable, we were up, everything seems under control", then Mike Brown happened, and you are stuck with that "WTF" feelings with the rotations which always seem experimental and robotic to even a C's fan friend of mine, and 2 years in a row, he got to tell me, "hey man, i am enjoying the win, but why did Mike Brown throw that lineup out?"

You can see it both ways, we did win 66/81 games afterwards, but a coach that consistently repeats his mistakes, can't say it is a good thing...unless he never thinks these are "mistakes", and would never do it any differently if today's game is replayed and that's just his way of doing things over a long season

At a point you begin to ask yourself, ..you have a player in Lebron James who commands the clubhouse and front office moves, ...you have assistants who are better at running teams during games than the head coach ...what specific real deal role is the head coach serving us ?

I can see issues coming to a head, where we begin to evaluate who might be better for this team in the long run ...a guy like Mike Brown, or someone else. And, the day is approaching when Mike Malone is going to be ready to take over control of a franchise and do we want this guy moving on when he has such a strong role and authority on this team ..?

I just see some issues brewing under the surface now, that could become tangible problems down the road.

Oh, don't mind me. The intention here wasn't to cause panic. In fact, I think this was a good game to start with. We'll adjust everything and keep getting better. I just can't see it playing out like 2008 did because most of the guys are healthy and there is serious depth to be had.

I'm just monitoring the rotations he's using game by game. Curious to know how he plays it out and hope to learn something out of it. If anything's the case, Mike Brown learns the most and gets the most out of it, because he already discovers things before any of us do.

It will be a long season, but we're normally going to think that after a game for 16-20 of the games total ;).

FYI, what Mike Brown said after the game:

"I did not do a good job with substitutions; we didn't always have flow," Brown said. "I'll figure that out soon."

When West is back, I wanna see something like a Shaq, Z, Moon, Boobie, Mo and a Andy, JJ, LeBron, Parker, West sub. I see this working. Shaq and Z is currently working. Mo is there to handle the ball so Boobie doesnt need to and Moon just need to be himself.
Andy is bad offensively so Lebron being there would help him a lot for P&Rs. If JJ could perform like he did on the pre-season and hopefully West comes back and performs like he did in 08-09, we would have a really good rotation system.

We all know Brown sucks as a coach besides defense, he is clueless and cannot adjust to in game matchups or rotations.

With that said why should we give him a free pass because of it? There are PLENTY of fans sitting at home predicting exactly what Brown will do wrong before he does it. They also have enough basketball IQ to know what in game adjustments need to be made.

If you have played basketball or watched enough I'd rather have some fans that I know personally run the offense and that is no joke lol.

Mike is a nice guy and all and brings the Defense but he needs to let go of the offense or give someone else the chance to do the rotation.

Potatohead is clueless most of the time and it really holds this team back, sadly.

With that said hope we come out and beat up on Toronto.

i see the direction this team is taking offensively and its a bit different than the previous years, but thats because we have somebody to drop the ball into the post.

if we are going to move further with more of an inside out game, than i dont see room for Z and Daniel Gibson

It might be because we aren't jelling yet, or the fact that Z had to come off the bench. but i felt last night Z was just going through the motions and really had more of a negative impact than he did positive.

Also if we get delonte back than some minutes are going to disappear, and i would actually like to see moon get more minutes, which leaves somebody out and that most likely will be daniel gibson. since the finals run, i see more and more that daniel gibson isnt an all that great basketball player, not calling him bad but for a championship team like ours, i dont see him taking minutes away from williams, moon or west. Its just not worth it.

also i like having some athletic guys on the court, it was awesome to finally see lebron throw an oop. pretty sure last one i saw was when ricky d was on the receiving end

Re: Brown uncertain about his rotation

Sometimes we feel that way about members here, Instead of trading them, we waive them.

This is one of the greatest one liners I have read since I joined RCF and probably one of the greast I have read on any forum. Definatly signature material.

Then we'll just have to suck it up. He's staying here for the year, and that's not changing.

I can probably list some pros and cons to what Brown does well and doesn't:

Pros:

  • Knows how to coach defense.
  • Knows how to motivate players.
  • Makes excellent in-between game adjustments (the type between a Game 1 and Game 2 of the playoffs).
  • Knows how to lessen the impact of problems (like unhappy players in the locker room).
  • Is able to help a team in multiple ways (make promises to get them to play defense like in 2007) when they aren't doing well.
  • Has a very competent basketball IQ when it comes to getting something to work (Zydrunas was able to use a different help defense mechanic from 2004-05 to 2005-06, don't forget that).
  • Has out coached opposing teams despite the lack of home court advantage.
  • When set with a rotation, the team is doing VERY well in all aspects.
Cons:

  • Lacks the ability to make in-game adjustments (the ability to adjust from a single play or quarter).
  • Does not have the same offensive awareness of a coach like Phil Jackson, Greg Popovich, George Karl, or Mike D'Antoni.
  • Does not have the strongest voice because of his tendency to be a Player's Coach.
  • Has little patience for players that don't understand how to play correct defense as well as others.
  • Is very set when it comes to a rotation that has worked and will usually not sub certain players to make correct adjustments.
Based on those, he still has more pros than cons. So he isn't really terrible at EVERYTHING like some people claim. A clue-less person doesn't show the ability to win games at at least a 60% rate each season. A clue-less person doesn't show the ability to beat opponents with home court advantage.

I would always trust a guy like Brown over amateurs because there's always the chance that pressure forces the latter to make decisions that aren't ethical or logical.

Don't under-estimate what is needed to coach Professionals that are paid $5,000 to $500,000 a GAME.

What up with Shaq already being upset? ( Heard on ESPN Around the Horn)

He didn't want to come out of the game halfway through the 1st qtr.

TOO EARLY SHAQUILLE!!!!

:(

Seriously?

I could understand if this were true. The team was hitting on all cylinders, we had a huge lead, Shaq was 3-3 from the field... Then because the time on the game clock matched the exact time on Mike Brown's laminated time sheet he deflated the whole team by removing the starters for our ice cold bench. That runied all momentum in the game.

The substitutions were way to abrupt. After several minutes of success, Mike Brown removed all starters and replaced with bench players... Those adjustments will be lethal to this team. I too wish Mike Brown would make adjustments based on what he sees in front of him, what's working and not working in the game, rather than relying on the damn laminated time card. :thumbdown

I dunno, seems like you'd play Lebron 48 mins a game if you went purely by what's working :chuckles:

I don't care for the minutes card, but anyone that's coached can tell you that your players never want to come out, they never "that" tired, and they can always do a better job than the guys who are out there. Shaq's embarrassing himself by complaining. It's certainly not Mike's fault that Shaq missed those chipshots later on.

MB already owned up, we'll see what happens next game. It took a long time to work up to a decent second unit last year.
