2019 Browns Rant Thread

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
I’m not a fan of Freddie anymore...

But what does your cliche line even mean? “That’s starts with the coach”. When does it become the PLAYERS’ faults for fumbling? Committing false starts? Missing assignments?

Point to coaching all you want, and there’s plenty of blame there, but we have a serious PLAYER problem here too. Freddie can’t do their jobs for them.
Lack of discipline. Keeping the same players in the game for the sake of talent even though they're consistently committing costly penalties or turnovers.

Ex. After that drop in SF, Callaway wouldn't dress for the following game if Belichick was his coach. Yet he's routinely garnered the third most snaps of any receiver relegating guys like Ratley to DNP - CDs.

He's rewarding terrible habits and mental mistakes; I'm wondering if he has a soft spot for mental mistakes since he tends to make so many, himself.

I'd love to be a fly on the wall at one of their practices to see how much they truly practice things like basic technique, snap counts, ball security, situational decision-making, etc.

I'm willing to bet it's zero.

Right, but he also benched Greg Robinson for a journeyman because of mental mistakes and lack of performance like you're asking of him.

I think there are far too many guys at key positions that Freddie does not feel like he can trust right now. And I agree with his assessment. He needs to figure out a path forward obviously; whether it's simplifying the game plan or shuffling guys around.

I am in no way absolving Freddie. He has been garbage.

But I really hate that we're talking more about Freddie than some of the mental midgets that he's saddled with on this team. I think coaching and players are equal parts to blame here, and it's frustrating as hell.

Dorsey had a huge undertaking to overhaul this roster. He's done a pretty good job to get us to this point from 0-16. But it's clear another big offseason is necessary to get us where we need to be. And maybe that includes a coaching change as well.

Another coach will do the same thing a new boss would do at a job after replacing the old one. They would put the employees in the best position to succeed. This includes ensuring that they know what they are doing and they have confidence in what they are doing. They're not coming to the office with a paddle. They should make sure that everyone understands the gameplan though. They need to see that people are not getting their jobs done and they might need to make an adjustment. Freddie is doing none of that. He's coaching like a boss who knows he's gonna get fired but also knows that the employees know that they'll be there longer than him.
What evidence do you have that the bolded part is true? I think that's your own spin based on, well... nothing. We all know that what has been done up to this point hasn't been effective enough to turn around the penalties. But you don't know what he is or isn't doing compared to how any other head coach would deal with the problem. Kitchens may be a rookie HC but he's been on enough NFL coaching staffs to see how these things are handled, and there's zero reason to think he isn't doing what any other HC and coaching staff would do.

If Kitchens benched every player who made bonehead mistakes he'd be out of players (and someone like Myles would have been one of the guys benched). As for the bolded part, I bet you're wrong that this stuff hasn't been drilled and practiced, and I'm sure there's reporting to back my side of the bet.

Bottom line is simple. Kitchens has the remainder of the season to get this team playing to their talent level, to get them to eliminate the boneheaded mistakes, and to get them to stop shooting ourselves in the foot. If he doesn't do that he'll be gone, simple enough. People calling for his immediate firing are over-reacting.

No way he makes it all 16 if they lose the next 3 games which is very possible

At the start of the season when the schedule came out, some of the more clear-headed people made statements that we could easily be at 2-5 at this point, based on a number of factors... the number of new players and the fact that it takes time for new players in new systems to gel... the fact that Kitchens is a rookie HC with a completely new staff... that our OLine has some serious holes... among other things.

Now, that has become the case. Some of our losses came because of egregious errors to be sure. Some are totally on Kitchens, but some are on Mayfield, some are on various players, and some are on Dorsey. Kitchens has been a disappointment to be sure but it remains to be seen if he makes some adjustments in his own decision making process to "get better" as he so often says. Mayfield has already shown a lot of improvement over the first few games even though he has a lot of room to improve more. Some guys like Garrett have made some improvements in reducing stupid penalties but our offensive line has been continuing to make some of the same mistakes, and I have to put some of that on Dorsey for relying on guys like Robinson and Hubbard who just may be mental midgets when it comes to focus and discipline, and it's hard to put all of that on the coaching staff.

That pretty much addresses the penalty issue. Now you also have to take some other things into account when evaluating some of our losses. Some of the interceptions have been totally on Baker, and as mentioned I've seen some progress with him making some adjustments and improvements. But some of the interceptions (Calloway for example) were huge and game changing. Some of the fumbles (Chubb/Patriots) were also HUGE factors, who would ever say we could spot the Patriots 17 points and come away with a win? The Titans and 49ers games were debacles and I can put a whole lot of the blame for those losses on Kitchens and his staff. IMO our other losses were a group failure that can't be solely blamed on Kitchens.

Absolutely no team in the NFL can win when they constantly turn the ball over, or when they constantly commit stupid penalties that kill their own drives and extend the drives of the opponent.

To sum it up, yes 2-5 is disappointing but it wasn't completely unforeseen. It was always a good possibility, but conventional wisdom says the remainder of the schedule should produce a lot more wins. What remains to be seen is if this coaching staff can get this team to play like a solid disciplined NFL team should play... fewer penalties, fewer unforced errors, more high level plays made by high level players. It remains to be seen if Kitchens can get on top of calling games instead of always playing from behind, and if he can reduce the questionable decision making. We have 9 games to find out.

Browns are playing away at Denver, against a tough Bills team and against the Steelers.

They could easily go 0-3. I’ll predict 2-1 bc I think they can beat the Steelers and either the Bills or Broncos in unsatisfying fashion. But I will not be shocked if the Browns are at 2-8 after these games.

I agree. The team is so inconsistent and shoots themselves so often it's difficult to gauge when they will play up to potential or just nose dive

At some point they need to pull their collective heads out of their collective asses. If they don't then I agree the buck stops with Freddie. But as I previously said, I think that is extremely unlikely. I don't blame anyone who lacks faith at this point, but I'm not in that group quite yet. I think Kitchens is a higher quality person and coach, as well as the coordinators. They should be able to get the situation under control and they have the highest sense of urgency about now.

We'll see.

We should beat the Broncos. That being said, if we lose to the Broncos, we will likely lose the next two games after that.

Those three teams are worse than any team we’ve played so far. I don’t see the Steelers or Bills beating us at home and I also don’t see the Broncos with a quarterback whose never taken an NFL snap besting us either. If we don’t go 3-0 over the next three we’ve gotten even more problems than what we already know.

This team can still make the playoffs - don't doubt it. Bills will come back down for sure. The rest of the field is pretty shaky.
