2019 Browns Rant Thread

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
At the start of the season when the schedule came out, some of the more clear-headed people made statements that we could easily be at 2-5 at this point, based on a number of factors... the number of new players and the fact that it takes time for new players in new systems to gel... the fact that Kitchens is a rookie HC with a completely new staff... that our OLine has some serious holes... among other things.

Now, that has become the case. Some of our losses came because of egregious errors to be sure. Some are totally on Kitchens, but some are on Mayfield, some are on various players, and some are on Dorsey. Kitchens has been a disappointment to be sure but it remains to be seen if he makes some adjustments in his own decision making process to "get better" as he so often says. Mayfield has already shown a lot of improvement over the first few games even though he has a lot of room to improve more. Some guys like Garrett have made some improvements in reducing stupid penalties but our offensive line has been continuing to make some of the same mistakes, and I have to put some of that on Dorsey for relying on guys like Robinson and Hubbard who just may be mental midgets when it comes to focus and discipline, and it's hard to put all of that on the coaching staff.

That pretty much addresses the penalty issue. Now you also have to take some other things into account when evaluating some of our losses. Some of the interceptions have been totally on Baker, and as mentioned I've seen some progress with him making some adjustments and improvements. But some of the interceptions (Calloway for example) were huge and game changing. Some of the fumbles (Chubb/Patriots) were also HUGE factors, who would ever say we could spot the Patriots 17 points and come away with a win? The Titans and 49ers games were debacles and I can put a whole lot of the blame for those losses on Kitchens and his staff. IMO our other losses were a group failure that can't be solely blamed on Kitchens.

Absolutely no team in the NFL can win when they constantly turn the ball over, or when they constantly commit stupid penalties that kill their own drives and extend the drives of the opponent.

To sum it up, yes 2-5 is disappointing but it wasn't completely unforeseen. It was always a good possibility, but conventional wisdom says the remainder of the schedule should produce a lot more wins. What remains to be seen is if this coaching staff can get this team to play like a solid disciplined NFL team should play... fewer penalties, fewer unforced errors, more high level plays made by high level players. It remains to be seen if Kitchens can get on top of calling games instead of always playing from behind, and if he can reduce the questionable decision making. We have 9 games to find out.
Can you find those statements because I genuinely don’t remember a single poster stating 2-5 was a realistic possibility

I think anyone who said that would have been absolutely hammered on this board as even the most pessimistic of fans were projecting 8 wins... and they weren’t common

The reality is, until the Browns actually win 8 games, we should never predict more than that. The last winning season was in 2007? It's a terrible team culture, started by Randy Lerner's absentee ownership and made much much worst by the southern grifter.

This was a nice break down of the 49ers game and I think it hits on the problems that persist to this day.

4-12. Baker takes a major step back. Freddie shows the lack of experience. Myles is exposed for having only two moves and sets the record of jumping offsides. OBJ gets hurt. Even more of Dorsey’s draft picks bust. Haslam cleans house yet again, showing he’s still an awful owner.

This was the worst predicted record in the 2019 season prediction thread. I think BMAN was joking?

Yes and no. I’m very pessimistic when it comes to the Browns. I wasn’t exactly buying the hype. I even got a talking to for this and some other posts if you know what I mean. To be fair, I wasn’t expecting the current shit show. This will probably whip some people up into a frenzy though.

It's certainly possible that people were both predicting a 2-5 start or close to it, i.e. 3-4, and at the same time predicting finishing at 9-7 or within the usual optimistic range, due to the "frontload" of the schedule.

We are still not that far off from where a realistic look at the "schedule game" said we were "supposed" to be.

The only true "surprises," TEN and @BAL, cancel each other out. And no, @SF was not a "surprise" - replacing extremely bad QB play from last year's 4-12 with a full season of JimmyG matters that much, as well as playing on the west coast.

Now you can certainly say that the way we've accumulated our 5 losses is more aggravating that anyone could've anticipated.,.,.

I had to do some digging. My (usually vague) recollection was that some comments to that effect came out after the schedule was released in April. Here's what I found;

Vee-Rex had us at 4W / 3L after week 8, and 4W / 4L after the Broncos game. That's about all I could find using my extremely limited search capabilities.

For the life of me I just recall someone looking at our schedule and talking about how the first half is a lot tougher than the optimists were saying, and that it was very possible we could be at 2/5 at this point of the schedule. I recall disagreeing with that because I am one of those optimistic forum members. I have no idea where or how to find it but i don't think I imagined it.

That's all I got.

This should have more likes than it does. Freddy hasnt even been a coordinator, Makes the gigantic leap to HC and he and this new team, with all above factors mentioned, go against the likes of Mike Vrabel, Pete Carroll, Sean Mcvay, Bill Belichick, Kyle Shanahan, Harbough, to start the season.

Turnovers and Penalties has cost us pretty much every game outside of 49ers.
