2019 MLB Trade Deadline

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Why would we trade Bauer if we didn't get a bat in the deal who couldn't help us out now? If I am trading Bauer I need production now from a bat in the return and also another top prospect and probably a couple more at least minor prospects. I am all for Bohm if we get an MLB ready bat who can help us now as well, but I don't see that happening.

Hence me saying "I'm not sure how interested the Indians would be in Bohm- simply because of his timeline"

The point of my post was that I don't think the Phillies would hesitate to trade Bohm

I'm probably not going to be a fan of any Bauer trade that doesn't get us at least one or two players that will be playing in Cleveland the next day.

We're leading the Wild Card and are three out of the division. Trading away one of our best pitchers for minor league players basically says that we don't care about this season. I need at LEAST one immediate major league starter to help us this season if we're moving Bauer.

To me that is someone like Kingery who is being used as an utility this season but is a 2nd Base normally. So he could be the utility/DH rotation guy this season and 2nd base long term, but like AZ_ said earlier, no way would the Phillies want to trade him because he is a main guy now in the lineup. I am not sure how the Phillies would expect us to trade them Bauer with a weaker farm system and the targets we want, almost towards the untouchable side in their minds.

To me its not the fact they wouldn't be interested in Bohm, since you will always be interested in a top player, but at the same time, who can they get with Bohm that can play now as well since the Indians are retooling and not selling. You need to replace Bauer with at least a prospect like a Bauers, one with some MLB ABs who could fit into this lineup. Phillies don't have that option to trade us since they don't have the depth to do so.

Indians are looking for a Kingery, Bohm, Marchan, Jones type of deal, but the Phillies are looking at Bohm, Howard/Morales, Marchan, Mezquita probably style of deal. That is too far apart to meet in the middle on to be honest from the Indians side.

I agree that fans and the clubhouse would be upset if the Indians made a Bauer deal for prospects HOWEVER what if they did a true buy/sell at the deadline?

For example, say the Indians trade Bauer for a prospect haul but also acquire Castellanos, Givens and starter like Alex Wood?

Just spitballing....

Who would we gain prospect wise and who we lose to make those moves hypothetically in your mind?

I think both McKenzie and Jones is an overpay... I'd love to try and turn one of them into two lesser prospects like Chang and Bradley or something. Maybe see if the Royals wanted a Greg Allen, roll the dice on Zimmer, or something else to help alleviate the OF logjam.

If that's the price though, I don't know... it's tempting, but I still probably say no.

I'm also terrible at judging these trade value conversations, so take anything I'm saying with a whole box of salt.

The thing that gives me pause is getting burned by Jones and McKenzie 20 times a year for 6 years

Also, Merrifield's age. He will turn 31 in January. Over the last 2 seasons, he average 39.5 stolen bases and 9 caught. This year he only had 15 steals and has been caught 8 times. Not really sure what that is about.

I would do it though. He checks all the boxes though that would make him a great fit here and Tito's wet dream; bat, speed, defensive flexibility, and a tremendous contract.

The Indians gave up 2 Top 5 prospects (#1/2 position and #2 pitching) in 2016 for 2-1/2 years of Andrew Miller and their #1/2 overall prospect in 2018 for 3-1/2 years of Brad Hand.

Maybe it's me being a bit down on McKenzie with his frame and injury issues, coupled with the Indians depth at the position. A trade like this for an impactful offensive player could also allow the Indians to "less selective" when trading Trevor Bauer in the offseason. Not meaning a subpar package, but with Merrifield in the lineup, they may be less pressed to be looking exclusively for a 2020 contributor in return.

How would it allow the Indians be less selective in a package for Bauer?

You’d need two top-50 prospects just to come close to even. More like two top-25 guys honestly....

Jones/McKenzie > Sheffield/Frazier and it’s not even close.

As much as everyone likes Merrifield, if you’re trading Jones and McKenzie together you better get a fucking superstar in his mid 20’s in return.

I mean, you’d be giving up like 18 years of control between Jones and McKenzie for maybe 5 years of Whit Merrifield on potentially the downside of his career.

You're misinterpreting what I'm saying. The Indians goal in shopping Kluber/Bauer in the offseason was to get a bat that contribute to the roster on Opening Day or in the very near future. Or with Bauer now, they would like a bat that could contribute tomorrow. With Merrifield on the roster, the Indians could be more open to taking back a prospect with higher upside, but is farther away from the majors.

Jones/McKenzie > Sheffield/Frazier and it’s not even close.

Value of 4.5 years of Merrifield (making only $22m) > Value of 2.5 years of Miller and it's not even close

That's certainly the risk you take

I’m so in on moving McKenzie if it means getting a Whit Merrifield.

Completely out in both in any deal for a non-star.
