2020 Draft Prospects Thread

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
I do believe the Browns will target a receiver, but I don't think it's a huge priority. Realistically, we are talking about a guy who will see the field on third and long situations or if someone is injured. I also think a one year deal will eventually happen with Hollywood Higgins, especially with all the changes to the coaching staff from last season.

But this is a great WR draft, so taking a flier is a good idea.

My favorite receivers in this draft class (in no particular order):

CeeDee Lamb
Laviska Shenault
Denzel Mims
Bryan Edwards
Justin Jefferson
Jalen Reagor

I'd think we'd value size in a WR in this draft given that our two best receivers are both under six feet, so that probably leaves Reagor out and I imagine he'll be gone by the time we're drafting a receiver anyway. Lamb likely will be as well, although I'd love to draft him if he somehow fell to us. There are a handful of other receivers I like in this class too (it's very deep on paper), but those six above are my favorites and I think we'll have a shot at several of them.
I absolutely love this receiving class. I expect Lamb, Jeudy, Ruggs and Higgins to all be gone before our second pick, but I would have no problem taking Mims in the second round. I really like him as a receiver. I think he has the complete package and is going to be a stud.

Really the only thing I don't like about Mims is the lack of anything other than receiving work in college. Usually I like players that got a lot of work on special teams and received some carries too. But man, 6'3", elite athlete, great college career, crushed at the senior bowl (which has boded well for receivers the past few years)...he's about as complete a WR package as you could want. Player Profiler puts his comp as Chris Godwin, and give me all of that.

If we walked away with this level of talent, plus an additional second and third round pick for next year, I'd consider that a win. It hurts not getting a tackle like Thomas or Wills at 10, but Simmons is a truly special talent that will impact the game.

Simmons also is the type of guy that will be most helpful to a defense with more holes because he can legitimately do everything. I’d still prefer Thomas, Wills, or Wirfs, but I would be perfectly happy and excited to root for that beast on the Browns next season.

Andrew Thomas is reported to have video conferenced with the Browns, Jets, Jags, and Dolphins yesterday. Hope he stays available at #10 if we don't trade out or steal Simmons.

Two questions:

1. Which safeties were on the board when you took Harrison at #74?

2. How do you feel about Buckeyes football on a scale of 1-10? One being a die-hard, ten being ready and willing to kill for another championship?

I really wanted to address safety. At that point, the top safeties were Burgess and Jones. I didn't feel comfortable taking either, so I grabbed Harrison to help fill the gap at LB. I feel we really needed another guy to develop next to Mack, and I like Malik Harrison in that third to fourth round area.

And... then I realized I didn't have to take a LB in the middle rounds because, unlike every other realistic scenario I've played out recently, this was one where I didn't take a LT at #10, and already took that linebacker with Simmons.

So... can I spin this to say that I see Simmons as playing a Kam Chancellor or Troy Polamalu strong safety role, hence my linebacker pick at 74? (I don't actually believe this--I think Simmons's best position to succeed is MLB)

I still love the value of Dobbins there. I think he's underrated. I don't think we should spend to keep Hunt after this year, and I don't think we should or will pay to keep Chubb when he's due for an extension.

I knew I'd get blasted for Buckeye homerism as soon as I went up to get Dobbins though :p

Why take Xavier McKinney when you could have K'Von Wallace in the 4th round?

K'Von is a similar player to Burgess. I see him more as a slot safety.

Perhaps, although I think K'Von could be more of your traditional deep safety too. Just don't ask him to go single high too much.

From what I understand of the Woods defense, he doesn't run a ton of single high coverage anyway.

Outside of left tackle, the Browns don't have any glaring needs at any other position in terms of needing a starter for 2020.

Can they draft better players in the second and third round than guys they have projected to start right now? Absolutely. But every position that isn't LT at the very least has an entrenched starter, a competent veteran or a young guy with some amount of upside already in place.

So really the Browns are in a position where they can pick the best player on the board with every selection with idea being replacing existing players when they price or age themselves out of town.

For example... all of these players listed below are likely to be here in 2020, but 2021? Maybe not. The Browns could draft...

A RB to replace Hunt
A WR to replace Landry
A TE to replace Njoku
An EDGE to replace Vernon
An iDL to replace Richardson/Ogunjobi/Billings
A LB to replace Goodson
A CB to replace Mitchell
A S to replace Joseph/Sendejo

I wouldn't chase perceived "needs" for the 2020 season at the expense of more talented players at lesser "need" positions because you have draft picks signed for dirt cheap for 4 years, so you have to factor in how they can help you beyond 2020.

Hypothetically...

If something unexpected happened and a borderline top 20 guy like Justin Jefferson falls to 41, I think you just take him and be happy about it. Doesn't matter if on paper he won't make as of an impact in 2020 as someone like Duggar or Delpit would. Jefferson could replace Landry as early as 2021 and the Browns can address the S position in the 2021 draft or in 2021 free agency with the additional funds from removing Landry's large salary.

Address needs in FA. Address overall talent level in the draft. I used to not think this way, but I've come to the conclusion that I was wrong.

I would probably have a heart attack waiting to see if Cleveland would drop to 49,,,what if he didn't? Better make sure you have
a back up plan if you are going this route. I would have to have a Jason Peters basically locked up or a way to get Trent Williams without totally getting screwed.
If you draft Cleveland I don't think you can bank on him being a plug and play player in year 1.

I'm assuming trading UP to ensure one of the top tackles is out of the question? Not sure who would want to bite.
