I knew I worded that very questionably with untapped potential. I think he most likely has untapped potential but to expect he has Bam untapped potential I think seems fairly unreasonable. It's over projecting him because of one players that has similar size and length as him.
I'd imagine 1 out of every 150 prospects or so develop in the way Bam has. So sure, expecting that is one thing but with someone like Okongwu, who has interesting tape flashes, is really young, proven collegiate impact, etc..... he's at least the type of player (to me), who has a better than average chance of being one of those 1 in 150 guys.
Okongwu is the safe pick that neither gets a GM fired or moves the needle much. I think like TT if Okongwu gets taken high, people will look back and wish their GM took a bigger swing at a different player with higher potential.
Go look back at past drafts. Really, your only goal is to get one of the 4-5 best players. Some might have 6-7 in a good draft but there is a lot of delusion around "higher potential" guys. There's so much luck involved in getting the best player but you should at least bucket players who you think are most likely to be the handful that comes out of the wash. If you think OO will be one of the 4-5 best guys, even if it is the 5th best, you take him.....especially considering his roster fit as well. Bypassing prospects like he or Haliburton, to chase ceiling, has been proven to be incredibly foolish. It is why so many bad picks are made in the middle of the lottery specifically.
