Some thoughts on B1G coaching.
Nebraska: So in a year when many expected the Scott Frost experience to come crashing down, somehow it hasn't for what may be the greatest 3 win team of all time (or whatever is being said in Lincoln to help people sleep at night). This situation seems to mirror the Harbaugh extension. Basically, we'll keep you around (for now) because we've finally learned to temper our expectations from the 90s, but we're paying you less and you need a new staff around you. I'd actually like Nebraska to be "back," since it'd be good for the conference and (as someone who wasn't watching when they were dominant) I have felt bad for that dedicated fanbase. But I am not at all convinced Frost is the guy and I feel like they'd need something else to jumpstart the program again. With LSU, Florida, and USC all looking for coaches, it's simply a bad year to enter the sweepstakes, so I get it.
MSU/PSU: The Land Grant Trophy schools have each signed their head coaches to massive 10 year deals. With Tucker, you have a newer coach that has a lot to prove but has exceeded early expectations. Going 2 for 2 against big brother is great, but there is the risk factor of not knowing what his ceiling might be or whether he can sustain success. Franklin, on the other hand, has a good track record with the downside of knowing you're not going to rise to another echelon in the sport with him. Every few years he'll challenge OSU and make a playoff push, but who knows if he'll manage to make it, let alone succeed there. Nobody wants to be post-Bo Nebraska and if you don't have anybody better lined up, why not? (especially considering the programs that could poach him away)
Overall I think these moves are good for stability in our league but I don't see anybody challenging Ohio State as top dog for the next decade right now (I mean long term, we could blow it any given year). I'm not rooting for anyone to knock us off, but it's a shame that we seem to be the only program in the conference that can produce contending teams.
