2021 NFL Draft: Day 1

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
This year is really put up or shut up for Woods. We were awful last year with ill-fitting personnel to his schemes, but there's really no excuse now. This team is built in the image of what a good analytical defense should be for today's NFL.

Not sure put up or shut up level, but it needs to be much improved. We went and got him 5 major free agents, 2 young pieces should be healthy and now our 1st round pick plus some more early round picks to come. He lost 3 DL, one to free agency/injury, one is a free agent and one was cut. So that is a net gain so far of 5 players with more to come via draft and free agency.

My point is we need to be a top half of the league defense. Put up or shut up sounds like top 5. I am ok with top 12 defense, top 5 offense, balanced and a contender.

Justified or not, they seem to really like Nick Harris as Tretter's eventual replacement.

I wouldn't hold his struggles at guard against him either. He's strictly a center and shouldn't be asked to play anywhere else.
That's who I was thinking of.

With Callahan on staff, in our scheme, we should be able to rinse and repeat with our lineman outside of LT.

Yeah, I don't think top 5 is ever realistic given the year to year variance in defensive performance due to injuries, etc. Somewhere in striking distance of top 10 should definitely be within reach though. We also probably have some positive regression due our way with some of the season long injuries and horrible play in high leverage situations. If we're just average on 3rd and 4th down, that's already a massive improvement.

Didn't we draft a guy last year or was it Forbes they want to be the heir apparent to Tretter?

Nick Harris a 6th round pick was drafted to possibly be a center. I wouldnt mind using one of our picks in the 3rd/4th round to pick up a top rated center to develop...maybe replacement for Harris, maybe competition, either way Trettor is getting expensive and old.

I hope the rest of the draft is BPA.

If I'm looking at need, and not blinded by just this season, but instead looking at the entire arc of this franchise, then offensive line and wide receiver seem like places where we need to draft talent. OBJ, Landry, Bitonio, Tretter and Conklin are all getting longer in the tooth and prohibitively expensive, while Teller might be up for a payday we can't afford.

If Landon Dickerson is there, I'm running the pick up at 59 myself. Also, the idea of Teven Jenkins being our "next guy up" on the offensive line, and learning behind Conklin and Teller just makes me giddy.

Nick Harris has the tools to be a good center in a ZBS. He got inserted at guard, and he's too small and weak to play the position in the NFL. I still think he can be fine as a center in the future.

That being said... if Landon Dickerson is available at 59, or Creed Humphrey in the third, that's some incredible value...

I am not convinced they like him, i am more thinking he is the best backup they had and dont want to hurt his confidence. I wouldnt mind a 3/4 pick to challange him some.

Just throwing some 2nd/3rd round names out there for discussion:

EDGE: Ojulari, Basham, Ronnie Perkins, Ossai

DI: Barmore, Milton Williams, Onwuzurike

LB: JOK, Bolton, Jabril Cox

S: Moehrig, Molden

WR: Elijah Moore, Marshall, Rondale Moore

IOL: Kendrick Green, Meinerz, Davis, Mayfield, Dickerson

Listening to Berry and Stefanski speak, some points:

  • keeps mentioning how young Newsome is.
  • Starter with 3 years of good production.
  • Scheme versatile.
  • Docs were comfortable with the injury history. Notes that he was banged up but he's still young with no major injuries.

The more we see from the draft record, I think we'll be able to narrow down what Berry looks for in high picks even more:

  1. Age and breakout age to some extent. Seems like a lot of weight put on this.
  2. Athletic testing- no one with a RAS/SPARQ below mid 80s.
  3. High level of production- the public is unclear on the metrics, but it's probably something like the pff grades at least on the surface level.
  4. Injury history- seems like they'll be willing to take some risks on prospects who were banged up (Delpit, Newsome) while shying away from prospects with major injuries. Would Farley have been an option if he was on the board?
  5. Position versatility- can't see them drafting lower impact positions, specially in the first. At the top of the board they'll stick to qb, corner/wr, DE/OT, and safety/TE. Basically high leverage positions in the passing game. LB, RB, etc will all be dropped on the team's board relative to consensus.
  6. Specifically mentioned demeanor wasn't one of the things they looked at the most i.e. if he's elite, he's gotta show it on some of the data we use.

Honestly, both the Steelers and Ravens passing on Teven Jenkins makes me as happy as our pick.

That man is a mean motherfucker who seems tailor-made for the AFC North. I'd love to see him go somewhere outside our division. Makes things easier on our defense.
Certainly would think he's one to keep on eye on for Cincinnati at 38.

Minnesota selected Barmore at 23

When I was in HS, a buddy of mine and I actually went to NYC for the draft. This was back in the Saturday-Sunday format when the first round took 6 hours.

He moved out of town a while back, but he just got fully vaccinated, so he flew in for the draft.

This setup has a so much more fun as a fan. NFL did a smart thing revamping the draft.
