2021 Trade Ideas and Deadline talk!

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Dealing one of our decent MLB ready prospects for a comp pick is a step backward.
And losing them for nothing is a bigger step backwards.

Teams that had to do this in recent years (SD, TB) have probably lost most of those trades (that's how we got Maton btw), but sitting on your prospects until after the season won't make the situation better.

Morris was a successful 7th rd pick, Tena or Fermin well developing mid tier IFA signings, but neither has made it to the Show yet. If we can turn that depth into another T. Freeman (or Logan Ice, that's the risk), it's a worthwhile gamble on its own, but especially so considering our system depth.

As fun as trade scenarios and possibilities are to ponder, to say it's premature to even start considering them is a huge understatement. We have no idea who is going to be performing well or struggling by the time July rolls around, not to mention which teams are still in contention. I also expect the Indians to prioritize finding internal replacements over trading for external replacements since we have all discussed how the main mission this season is identifying which players are part of their core going forward.

I don't want to go full CDAV on you, but considering that half our 26 roster has been acquired via recent trades, what's the harm?

I agree on the Trade Ramirez thread, that is, was and will remain unnecessary to discuss.
Thanks for going easy on me. Much appreciated than the expected reactions.

I can't, because Blair and Taubensee got us Lofton, which then got us Justice and Grissom, which then reminds me of Grissom completely muffing an easy flyball in the '97 ALCS that almost cost them the series, and that makes me all HULK SMASH! ragey to the point where I get sidetracked from completing the rest of the trade chain.

(Yes, I'm still pissed about a muff almost a quarter-century ago, one made before many people on this site were born or were still shitting their diapers, and one that ultimately didn't decide the outcome of the series. Doesn't say much for my mental state, but here we are.)

Well you need to get past the anger and have to keep going in the trade tree lol Lofton got us Justice, who then got us Westbrook then Westbrook for Kluber then Kluber for Clase...

So we now have a trade deadline thread on April 11th. In addition to the trade Jose thread. Wonderful idea.

Actually I am slightly at fault for this to begin with... I am the first to say JRam could be traded then I added to the JRam trade we could be trading so and so discussions started going off. Hey at least if we do make a trade, we can likely tell you who the person is since we have enough time to go through all the players in the league lol

The amazing thing about that chain of events is that the Indians really did win every trade in that chain.

Taubensee for Lofton? Big win.
Lofton for Justice/Grissom? Probably the closest call in the chain, but Justice was quite productive, and Lofton did return after his time in Atlanta.
Justice for Westbrook? Win.
Westbrook for Kluber? Huuuge win.
Kluber for Clase? Too early to really tell, but looking very promising.

That's a heck of a streak, spanning three decades and multiple GMs/ownership groups.

The only other one that we have still going is the Russel Branyan trade for Ben Broussard, who got us Choo, Choo got us Bauer and Bauer got us Allen and Reyes.

Trading for a major league player using our prospect currency (more than one) should be confined to prospects in need of roster protection.. perhaps desperately needed.. like Jhonkensy Noel, Brian Lavastida, Bracho, Palacios, Fermin, Miller, Rocchio.. etc.. etc.. many who's names have been mentioned throughout this forum..

More and more talent means more and more that top out below the ML level and are lost.. or will be lost.. The ability to keep everyone.. isn't possible.. the ability to keep the guys who give the Indians the best shot at winning..is the same answer..

Timing is everything..

Hilarious! I don't even remember that! I just remember Marquis's homer that won the game in Camden Yards...isn't it odd what we become fixated on? I'm still livid Lofton wasn't sent home to tie the seventh game in the 2007 ALCS in Fenway...I just knew, I KNEW, Casey Blake was going to bang into a double play on the next pitch. And he did. Because the sports gods never reward the timid.

If they make a trade at the deadline my guess is it will be a veteran starter on an expiring contract from a non-contending team after McKenzie gets injured or proves he needs to be in the pen.
CDAV has made that suggestion as well, and I suspect you both may be right. I think the need to cover innings with quality outings--so essential to the team's competitiveness--will triumph over any current lineup concerns. The game still starts and stops with the guys on the mound, and while we surely have some talent in the pipeline, a reliable veteran presence (lost when Carrasco was dealt) seems a likely acquisition target at some point.

I get talking future is fun, but I swear this section in the last few months is all about talking prospects than the current product on the field. We got a thread about trading Jose and now this? Good Lord

Well the problem is there are a lot of peeps who aren't happy about some of the players on the field and during spring training, some of our prospects really out hit some of the regulars it felt like.
